The Tri-Town RotaNews - September 2, 2009

The Gathering
An amiable group gathering in anticipaton of an interesting meeting.

President Jeff Kruck opened the meeting at about 12:30 pm and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

John Plate led us in a prayer, giving thanks for our fellowship and for Rotarians, and reminding us to be generous in what we do for throughout the world.

Bob Murphy pitched in again today helping with greetings, meal choices and attendance. Bob's been a great sport helping out our temporary secretary, Harry Martin, but he is really hoping someone will relieve him of this duty soon.
Thanks, Bob.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until September 16, 2009 to complete a makeup.

If your days are full, consider a make up at eClub One. Log on to www.rotaryeclubone.org/ and follow the instructions for a make up. You should spend 30 minutes on the site.

Click for where our members have made up recently.

Don't forget, the meeting of August 12 was not held at Angelica's. Instead, President Jeff Kruck has requested all members to Make Up this meeting by attending a meeting at another Rotary Club. Members are also requested to bring some insight back to TBM for discussion.

Be sure to get a "Make Up Card" from the secretary of the club where you make up.

If you're not sure if you fulfilled the Make Up request made by President Jeff, check the list above. A missing name means you have not Made Up or have not informed the TBM secretary.

This is also a good place for the Sergeant at Arms to look if enforcement becomes necessary!

Announcements:

Pres. Jeff wanted to make sure our speaker had ample time for her presentation, so there were no announcements. However Pres. Jeff did remind all to help our club by doing their Make Up and bringing some new information back to TBM.

The RotaNews crew also remind everyone that
The 30th running of the  Fall Foliage Classic Road Race
 is fast approaching.

This event on Sunday, October 18, is a major fund raiser. Funds come from sponsors. Be sure to get out to past sponsors that you know and get a committment for this year!

Raffle:

Brad Swanson pulled a winner today. It wasn't a big pot, but Brad is close to making his Sustaining Member Contribution this year.
Congratulations Brad!

Bob Alert:

Bob Murphy was present and accounted for. Bob Luszinski made a late appearance that called for a round of applause. We were all so happy to see you Bob!
Two out of three is not so bad.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

No fines today but I have a feeling they are coming.........

Bob Luscinski had a happy dollar because he won red sox tickets at a makeup meeting he did at the saugus club. Bob may be visiting the Saugus club more often.

A Fun Bunch At Lunch
Everyone attending enjoyed enthusiastic and spirited conversation

Getting To Know You:

Where do we begin......

We had a lot going on at our table today. We started talking about Carrie Dick's vacation at Merrymeeting lake. Did you know it is the coldest, cleanest lake in New England. Brad Swanson of course knew that. In case you didn't know Brad is full of fascinating facts. He's a very worldly guy. This conversation led to a conversation about interesting places to eat. Harry Martin recommends Durgin Park at Faneuil Hall, he said everyone needs to go there at least once in their life.

Did everyone know Harry used to live in New York??????

We also found out what a popular name Jen is. Harry has a daughter named Jen who had two best friends growing up also named Jen. Brad is an old friend of Harry's daughter Jen. Brad also has a sister named Jen and his wife's name is Jen. And of course there is our fellow Rotarian Jen Kocur, who's maiden name is Sacco. She went to high school with two other Jen Sacco's.

That's a lot of Jen's!

Program:

Program Chair, Steve Mooney introduced our guest speaker Karen Keefe who is the Community Relations Manager for Mass Relay.

-Mass relay was started in 1991.

-There are 500,000 relay users in MA.

Karen's job involves:
* Communicating with the 500,000 relay users in Ma.
* She creates awareness about Mass relay
* She increases business partnerships with Mass relay
* She promotes the benefits to Massachusetts business to become relay partners

If your business is interested in becoming a relay partner please go the website at www.massrelay.com and enroll your business. By doing this your business will be advertised for free on the website.

Karen Keefe
How Mass Relay Works
To make a relay call dial 7-1-1 from any phone.
Joanne Travers and Karen Keefe did a role play to show us how a relay call works.
Pres. Jeff Kruck pretended to be the typist, something he appears to do very well.

Seems pretty simple.

In exchange for our business cards, Karen gave us all slinky post its and flashlights at the end of her presentation.

Membership Moment:

A strong membership is so important to the overall success of any organization. Growth and retention have to be in the spotlight constantly. As membership chair I have been charged with heading the largest committee in the Club...each and everyone of us. Collectively we can make TBM stronger, more involved in the communities we serve and fun.

When was the last time you asked a friend, a neighbor or business associate to come to a TBM meeting? I admit, it's been a while since I put out an invitation and I have a goal to find one person to join our ranks during this Rotary year.

I ask everyone to please share your thoughts and ideas as to how we can grow the ranks of TBM.

All the best,
Joe Long
Membership Chair
