The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 26, 2009

Things were a bit hectic before the start of the meeting. It seems Angelica's thought there would be no meeting for TBM and had not set up the room. SAA Peter McAllister sprang into action and saw to it that the room was set up promptly and properly.
Well done, Peter!

President Jeff, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

John Plate led us in a prayer, giving thanks for all we tend to take for granted and reminding us to be generous in what we do for throughout the world.

Bob Murphy pitched in again today helping with greetings, meal choices and attendance.
Thanks, Bob.

Bob Alert:

The Bob Alert came early today!

Bob L presented a make up report from Ipswich to Bob M, commenting that he had to fill it in himself.

Bob M, looking at the high quality signature, noted that someone else must have signed it for Bob L. Bob M said everyone knows that accountants write pretty illegibly, just like he does.

A somewhat surprised Bob L took a pen and affixed his signature to the form in a manner and with the quality that John Hancock must have used.

All Bob M could say was "WOW!"

Special Presentation:

Peter McAllister introduced 2 guests from MASCO Soccer Team: John Miller and Kevin McAllister. They are seeking sponsors for this years Ad Book to support the need for a scoreboard in the back soccer field... please consider your donation to help build the soccer team kitty pool!

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

There were 12 members in attendance today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until September 9, 2009 to complete a makeup.

If your days are full, consider a make up at eClub One. Log on to www.rotaryeclubone.org/ and follow the instructions for a make up. You should spend 30 minutes on the site.

Click for where our members have made up recently.

Don't forget, the meeting of August 12 was not held at Angelica's. Instead, President Jeff Kruck has requested all members to make up this meeting by attending a meeting at another Rotary Club. Members are also requested to bring some insight back to TBM for discussion.

In an effort to get all members to Make Up at another club, the members present today agreed, by a show of hands, to extend the time allowed for the Make Up until September 4.

Be sure to get a "Make Up Card" from the secretary of the club where you make up.

If you're not sure if you fulfilled the Make Up request made by President Jeff, check the list above. A missing name means you have not Made Up or have not informed the TBM secretary.

This is also a good place for the Sergeant at Arms to look if enforcement becomes necessary!

Make Up Comments:

Jan Sinclair and Peter McAllister commented on their Make Up visits to other clubs.

  • Reading has a scheduled business meeting in place of a program, once a month.

  • Hamilton/Wenham has a fundraising calendar made up of pictures by local photographers.

  • It wasn't obvious what Newburyport could offer to TBM

  • Clubs that sing at their meetings should do so with enthusiasm.

Raffle:

No winner this week...

Fines and Happy Dollars:

  • Our SAA Peter McAllister diligently collected fines and happy dollars this week

  • Jan Sinclair thanked everyone for contributing to their Cash for Clunker deal made by her husband last weekend....

  • Lisa Foley was thankful her Boston meetings were cancelled

  • Peter McAllister thanked his guests for coming to introduce themselves and the Ad Book

  • Joanne Travers was thankful the officer parked at Angelicas didn't fine her for running a yellow, turned red, light

  • Pres. Jeff was thankful his daughter was headed back to college

  • REMEMBER: SUSTAINING MEMBER contributions are always welcome! (Did Harry Martin pay a fine for this announcement?)

  • Harry also commented that The New Meadows Garden Club will be having a Beer Tasting event at The Gould Barn in October. Stay tuned for more details.

Photo Shoot
Harry kept trying his camera. It seems that it developed a catastrophic fault that was repaired at no cost by Canon, even though it was out of warranty.
Club members participated in the photo shoot with great enthusiasm

Program:

As the program today, President Jeff Kruck conducted a Business Meeting and Discussion:

  1. Board appointed Bob Was and Bob Luscinski in July... board also discussed committees

  2. Preliminary Budget in the works:
    • $3,000 Foundation
    • $3,000+ Community Service
    • $3,500 International
    • $2,500 Vocational
    • $1,500+ Administrative
    • Totals less than $15,000 each year. Club should raise more than enough to cover the minimal. Jeff would like to see more PR and members being proactive about publicity. Club needs to take control of publicity, and our community service projects shoudl eb better promoted.

  3. Road Race, Chaired by Lisa Foley....an experienced and knowledgeable runner!
    • she will send out letters to all sponsors
    • she also asks members to make their sponsor connections and ask for continued support
    • board of selectman and police have been notified and plans have been confirmed

  4. The club voted to approve the necessary funds for Bob Murphy to proceed with the "Dictionary Project"

  5. Other Fund Raising Ideas:
    • revisit Comedy Night (January 2010)
    • Gould Barn Brew ha ha

Membership Moment:

A strong membership is so important to the overall success of any organization. Growth and retention have to be in the spotlight constantly. As membership chair I have been charged with heading the largest committee in the Club...each and everyone of us. Collectively we can make TBM stronger, more involved in the communities we serve and fun.

When was the last time you asked a friend, a neighbor or business associate to come to a TBM meeting? I admit, it's been a while since I put out an invitation and I have a goal to find one person to join our ranks during this Rotary year.

I ask everyone to please share your thoughts and ideas as to how we can grow the ranks of TBM.

All the best,
Joe Long
Membership Chair
