The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 5, 2009

Joe Long working the crowd before the meeting.

President Jeff Kruck rang the bell at 12:20 pm and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

John Plate gave the prayer of the day, asking everyone to appreciate what they have and think of . Thanks John!

Bob Murphy pitched in again today helping with greetings, meal choices and attendance.
Thanks, Bob.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

There were 20 members in attendance today.

Make Ups:

There were no make up cards received today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until August 12, 2009 to complete a makeup.

If your days are full, consider a make up at eClub One. Log on to www.rotaryeclubone.org/ and follow the instructions for a make up. You should spend 30 minutes on the site.

Click for where our members have made up recently.

Don't forget, the meeting of August 12 will not be held at Angelica's. Instead, President Jeff Kruck has requested all members to make up this meeting by attending a meeting at another Rotary Club. Members are also requested to bring some insight back to TBM for discussion.

In accordance with Article VII, Section 1a of the TBM Club Constitution, this make up should occur between July 29 and August 26. Be sure to get a "Make Up Card" from the secretary of the club where you make up.

Announcements

  • Pres. Jeff Kruck reminded us next week’s meeting will not be held at Angelica's. Rotarians will need to make up by attending a different rotary club and reporting back.
Pres. Jeff really wants us to see what other clubs are doing.

  •
All who attended Camp Rotary had a great time, included Peter McAllister who seemed to hold a spoon stuck to his nose for quite awhile. Good to see Peter acted his age!

  • At the TBM Board meeting on July 23, those present elected Peter McAllister to be Sergeant at Arms for the 2009-2010 Rotary year. A vote was also taken to appoint Bob Luscinski and Bob Was as Directors to fill two of the empty positions.

  • There are still three positions to be filled: Vice President, Secretary and one Director. The effort continues to find members to fill these positions. Anyone interested in serving, please contact President Jeff.

Raffle:

No winners today!

We are still looking for the red joker

Fines and Happy Dollars:

  • Sergeant at Arms Peter always tries to get extra dollars out of Brad Swanson. But not this time. Brad was dared to hold a spoon on his nose and Peter would give a dollar himself. Brad did it with no problem! - Go Brad! J

  • Both Brad Swanson and Bob Luscinski brought substantial checks with them ($=age is traditional) to anti up when suitably serenaded by the assembly, led by SAA Peter. About 1/2 the meeting later, the Happy Birthday song came wafting back through the bar, as if via some high tech echo device. Nice touch!

  • 'Alley Oop' Harry Martin announced he wants everyone to reads his emails. Harry why do they call you Alley Oop?

  • Joanne Travers just came back from a working summer in Honduras followed by a lovely vacation of beaching it, Next week Joanne will be presenting at the Ipswich Club if anyone would like to join they are more than welcome.

  • SAA Peter just finished a golf tournament. And he didn’t get hit this time! Way to watch for those balls Peter!

Bob Alert:

Bob was there, Bob was there, and Bob was there!

Now that is really deserving of a Bob alert!!!

Getting To Know You:

Today we had a great discussion. The table discussed when and where they were during world changing events such as 9/11, JFK Assassination, and the man on the moon. Of course they all looked at Jen Kocur, thinking she wasn’t born yet during some of those times! Thanks guys!

We also talked about the many critters that seem to mess with our gardens and yards. We found out that Ira Singer's front lawn looks like a mini petting zoo and Jan Sinclair's garden is getting eaten up by deer. Jan put a small fence up. Hopefully that stops them but Deer can jump higher than 4 ft.

Good luck Jan!

Program:

Our guest speakers from the League of Women Voters of Amherst, Ma, Diane Steane and Jackie Wolfe, came to us to speak about Health Care Reform.

They had very interesting slides and information to share with us. Their position on health care took about three years to study. They advocated a single payer system.

The three main objectives were high quality health care, affordable health care, and accessible to all. They claimed their data showed us that the United States citizens live far shorter lives than other countries. Many of our members aren't so sure about that.

Rotarians of the tri-town have very strong beliefs on Health Care Reform we found in the Q & A part of the presentation. If we had the time, these questions could have gone on for quite a while longer.

Membership Moment:

A strong membership is so important to the overall success of any organization. Growth and retention have to be in the spotlight constantly. As membership chair I have been charged with heading the largest committee in the Club...each and everyone of us. Collectively we can make TBM stronger, more involved in the communities we serve and fun.

When was the last time you asked a friend, a neighbor or business associate to come to a TBM meeting? I admit, it's been a while since I put out an invitation and I have a goal to find one person to join our ranks during this Rotary year.

I ask everyone to please share your thoughts and ideas as to how we can grow the ranks of TBM.

All the best,
Joe Long
Membership Chair
