The Tri-Town RotaNews - October 1, 2008

 

President Janet rang the bell and brought the meeting to order. Joe Carroll addressed Rotarians with a prayer.

 

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

TBM had quite a turnout today. Most members attended and there was quite a showing of guests and visitors, including:

Special Rotary Guests:
D.G. Tom Elliott (Danvers), D.G Elect Ingrid Brown (Rockport), and A.G. Peggy Pedro (Peabody)

Other Rotary Visitors:
Aileen Ang (Ipswich), Linda Calder (Ipswich), Polio Plus Chair, Tom Standring (Danvers), and Derek Scialdone (Hamilton-Wenham)

Guests:
Steve Mooney, guest of Joe Long, Wayne Hunt, guest of Jim Fitzgerald, Jack Hauck, guest of Gretchen Marks, and Derek Beatrice, guest of Janet Larson.

 

Make Ups:

There were no make up cards reported today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until October 15, 2008 to complete a makeup.

 

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Fines and Happy dollars were collected by Sergeant at Arms, Brad Swanson.

  • Peter McAlister announced that Masco Boys Soccer Ranked #2 (7-0).

  • Greg Silvano coughed up a couple for a 401K contribution he was able to make.

  • Ira Singer Told us that the Girls Soccer at Masco also doing well: ranked in top 10 in the state.

 

Raffle:

John Plate pulled the Jack of Hearts.

Bob Murphy (rigged once again?) pulled a NO WIN again...

 

Announcements

  • The TBM Board met with DG Tom Elliott today.

  • Gretchen Marks welcomes continued donations for the Boxtop Thrift Store. Monthly sales from our donations bring in $$$ to our Foundation's Donor Advised Fund. Remember that items are accepted on a seasonal basis.

  • A reminder that The Fall Foliage Classic Road Race is fast approaching. October 19th is only 2 weeks away.

    • Please promote and distribute flyers.

    • We need sponsorship and racers!

    • Rotarians are expected to attend and help out with one of the committees. Check your assignment.

  • Ipswich Club visitors announced their first Masquerade Ball fundraiser at Tunner Hill, October 25th 7:30-midnight (14th-18th century attire $75 pp.

 

Program:

Our speaker today, District Governor Tom Elliott gave us an Update on District Activity:

R.I. President DK Lee's program interests, thoughts and feeling given at a January DG meeting. Encourages clubs adn districts to continue with projects that improve child mortality and support the following projects:

  • clean water
  • literacy
  • health
  • hunger

Grants Committee accepting matching grants and district simplified. Sooner the batter. Oct is the deadline for Simplified Grants. (Linda Parker is wokring on one for our club)

Polio Plus: Gates Foundation gave $100 million and wants Rotary to match this. Tom is seeking to fill a pillow case labeled "Make Dreams Real" with bills from club members. There is already $25 million raised by Rotary so far to support the elimination of polio in the following four countries remaining: India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Afghanistan.

Youth Exchange Programs running nicely: Early Act, Interact, Rotoact (seeking a chair for this position...which deals with colleges. There are 5 colleges to date that have rotoract clubs)

2 or 3 Ambassadorial scholars will be sponsored in 2009

Tom gave credit to all district leaders helping to run newsletters and programs throughout our district.

  • WORLD Peace and Understanding Dinner: Feb 5, 2009 Danversport Yacht Club 6-9pm
  • GSE INbound Team from South Africa: April 18- May 16th, 2009
  • District Conference: May 1-2, 2009 Salem Massachusetts : a combination of fellowship and events
