The Tri-Town RotaNews - September 12, 2007

President Todd rang the bell and brought the meeting to order.

This time we met in the bar so Bob Murphy didn't even have to leave his favorite seat.

Joe Carroll gave the blessing.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Fred deNapoli, AG visited us from the Peabody club.

Meaghan Dragani who has been proposed for membership by Gretchen Marks, also joined TBM today.

Make Ups:

There were no make up cards reported today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until September 26, 2007 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy dollars were collected by Vice President (aka Stand In Sergeant at Arms) Jeff Kruck.

  • Bernie Creedon was happy that the school year was off to a good start.

  • Harry Martin is on the move. He just down loaded the latest sustaining member contributions and we are not number one in the district currently. "Get it in!"

  • President Elect Janet Larson was happy that Meaghan Dragoni will be installed next week.

  • Gretchen Marks was happy to receive a check from the BoxTop Store.

  • Bob Courtlangus says get a cub scout to join today, it's that time of year.

  • Todd Darling was happy to have the future star of "Pirates of the Caribbean", our own Eden Hutt with us today.

  • Bob Was had happy bucks for our Windrush Farm grant and event that is fast approaching, 10/13. See Bob for details.

  • Bob Murphy was sad that he couldn't make the Sox game tonight.

  • Joe Carroll was happy to make it through his boxing match, you should see the other guy he says. Bob and weave, Joe.

  • Oscar Padjen was happy.

  • President Todd had happy dollars for the Masco football teams first win Saturday.

  • Peter McAlllister was happy to announce the need for sponsors and help for the road race. Please solicit sponsors!

Raffle:

There were no winners today. Why are there an odd number of cards left??

Announcements

  • Keith Harris goes into surgery today to repair his heart and try and clear up the infected area. Again thoughts and prayers for Keith and Chrisitina.

  • Pres. Todd had 2 tickets for the Sox tonight, what a steal!

  • Gretchen Marks has made the arrangements for our Fair meeting. This year we will be in the Club House. Members only, your Rotary pin is your ticket in.

  • Next week our District Governor, Julia Phellps will be here. BOD meeting will begin at 11:00 AM. Tom Elliot, DGE and Peggy Pedro, AG will also be here. Please bring new children's books for Gov. Julia's book drive. Meaghan Drangoni will be installed into the Club.

  • The 28th running of the  Fall Foliage Classic Road Race
is fast approaching and we are sprinting to get things done. Sponsors are needed. Sign up forms and runner registrations are out. Think about who you can approach for sponsorship. This is one of our biggest fund raisers lets all make the day a great success! Gilly once again will be helping out this year saving the Club some much needed dollars.

Program:

This week's speaker was Dan Strollo from In Control Advanced Driver Training. He was introduced by Fred deNapoli, AG, and Jim Hayward of the Safe Roads Alliance.

Dan's group gives more than drivers education. They teach people how to control their cars in situations that we often see for the first time while learning how to drive in our first years behind the wheel. They also provided advanced driving techniques for police.

Rotary Club's have been involved with Dan's program for 3 to 4 years now. A Large part of what these clubs do is simply getting the word out to local schools and officials. On average each US high school experiences a student death every three years as a result of an auto crash. Statistics prove that drivers who go trough the training are better prepared to drive out in the real world. The program has been shown to reduce teen accidents by 80%. This decreased instance of car crashes has been recognized by the auto insurance industry. Some insurers are even providing discounts and incentives to people who enroll in the program. Perhaps we as a club should discuss getting involved in promoting the training. It costs us nothing and we just may help save a life.
