The Tri-Town RotaNews - January 24, 2007

Rotarians O'er the World, You Lead the Way!

Commissioned to commemorate the visit of Donna Jean Wayman, Rotary International District Governor, District 7930, to the Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton Rotary Club, Massachusetts, USA, on September 6, 2006.

Meeting started promptly at 12:15 with President John leadinging the Pledge
Joe Carroll lead us in prayer.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Guests today were Rachel Williams from Ipswich and Dr. Nadeem Afridi who represents All Pakistani Physicians of New England. Dr Afridi was also our speaker.

Make Ups:

There were no make up cards today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until February 7, 2007 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Gretchen Marks toted Spencer today. She was a kinder, gentler more attractive version of our typical Sgt. at Arms.

  • Harry Martin was happy for the turnout of the Blood drive and reminded us that those participants will receive Foundation Recognition points due to their efforts.

  • Linda Parker echoed Harry's happy dollar on the Blood Drive.

  • Joanne Travers was thrilled to finally have gone skiing this past weekend.

  • Joe Carroll had many happy dollars (one) for his granddaughter who recently took her AP Math and Physics test and scored 100% on both.

  • Peter McAllister had a sad dollar in that his ski weekend to Sunday River was cut short due to his advanced age. It seems that three runs down the mountain (cumulative time about 7 minutes) paled in comparison to his time spent by the fire drinking beer. Sounds like a happy dollar to me.

Raffle:

Joe Carroll and Janet Larson were today's unlucky winners since both missed finding the Queen of Hearts. And then there were 10 and over $400.

Program:

Dr. Nadeem Afridi, our speaker today provided us with a boots on the ground view on the Pakistani earthquake which took place on October 8, 2005. The region of Azad Kashmir, was so remote that the primary source of outside help came via helicopter. The earthquake left 3.5MM homeless, 70,000 dead of which 20,000 were children and over 130,000 severely injured.

Through the tireless work of Dr. Afridi, Rachel Williams and countless others there are over 200 programs, much of which are collaborations, dealing with a variety of logistic issues still existent over a year after the earthquake. Rotary's involvement is far reaching. The wheelchair foundation has offered a 2 for 1 "special" for wheelchairs. Local Rotary Clubs have worked to support makeshift schools, re equip hospitals and provided materials to help rebuild the areas hardest hit.

At the conclusion of the speech, President John presented Dr. Afridi with a check for $500 to aide his groups efforts.

Upcoming Programs:

January 31: - Honorary member Gail Hull will bring us up to date on her activities with PID.
