The Tri-Town RotaNews - January 17, 2007

Rotarians O'er the World, You Lead the Way!

Commissioned to commemorate the visit of Donna Jean Wayman, Rotary International District Governor, District 7930, to the Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton Rotary Club, Massachusetts, USA, on September 6, 2006.

President John rang the bell and Joe Carroll asked us what is our definition of success.

SUCCESS

To Laugh Often and Much

To Win the Respect of Intelligent People
and
Affection of Children

To Earn the Appreciation of Honest Critics
and
Endure the Betrayal of False Friends

To Appreciate Beauty

To Find the Best in Others

To Leave the World a Little Better
Whether by a Healthy Child
A Garden Patch
Or a Redeemed Social Condition

To Know even One Life
Has Breathed easier
Because YOU have Lived

This is to Have SUCCEEDED

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Announcements

President John had few announcements.

  • Peter McAllister is selling past Road Race tees. $5 gets you one of these collectors' items.

  • The Box-Top Consignment Shop sent out their newsletter and made mention that TBM has been one of their supporters. Funds they raise through the sale of goods we give help them fund a number of worthy local causes including; VNA Care Network, Elder Health Care program, Scholarships to area schools, Council of Aging, HAWC (Help for abused women and children), Plowshares, Tewksbury State Hospital, and people in need.

  • Comedy Night February 8, 2007. Rally up and sell tickets. Our coffers depend on the event.

  • The GSE team coming to visit from India is in need of housing for one of their members during March 10-15. Oscar Padjen did this years ago when the Scots were in the area and he said the experience was great. To this day they still keep in touch. Joanne Travers volunteered her home.

  • The TBM Rotary maintained Kiosk in Topsfield is a great place to post announcements, for sale items etc. Check it out.

  • Jan Sinclair received a "Thank you" week for the poinsettia from a resident at Four Mile Village.

  • Start thinking about February 8ths Comedy Night. Who do you know that could use a good laugh? $20 is the cost per ticket and appetizers will be served.

Comedy Night

  • Comedy Night is approaching, February 8, 2007, 7-10 here at Angelica's. Paul Gilligan has come through once again and offered to help us out. Thank you Joanne for arranging the evening. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Call Joe Long 978 360-2793 for tickets. They make great Christmas gifts.

Program:

Today's presentation was by the Harry Martin and Jan Sinclair.

Harry began his time in the spotlight by inviting Peter McAllister, Gretchen Marks and Oscar Padjen to the stage. All three were presented with PHF+ pins. Peter is now a PHF+3, a surprised Gretchen was presented with her PHF+2 pin (it seems she has a secret admirer)and Oscar received his PHF+1 pin. Congratulations all.

Harry went over the meaning of our Member Summary Reports, which show our individual and collective contribution the Foundation.

Harry explained the Foundation Recognition points system. The points are used to reward or incent members that participate in events such as the blood drive. Saturday is the last day of our TBM Sponsorship. By all means don't think that you need to stop there or if you can't make the date please feel free to visit the center 99 Rosewood anytime. Call ahead to make a reservation, 1 800 GIVE LIFE.

Be proud of the fact that we are a 100% sustaining member club and have been so for the last 5 years. That means each member contributes at least $100 per to the Foundation. We are also 100% Paul Harris Fellows as well.

Jan Sinclair educated and reminded us today about the Clubs attendance policy.

You must attend 60% of the clubs regular meetings. Of those meetings, you must be present for 60% of the meeting time. Half of the meeting must be at TBM and the other half you can make up anywhere a Rotary Club meets, worldwide.

If you miss a meeting, you have 14 days before and after in which to make up. If you are traveling out of the country the make up timeframe is waived.

The TBM Board of Directors is expected to be at all board meetings. BOD members are allowed 4 excused absences. The importance of board participation can't be stressed enough. It is vital to the Clubs success.

Members can request leaves of absence for up to 6 months. The BOD approves such requests, which must be in writing.

Honorary members have no attendance or dues requirements.

Thank you Harry and Jan.

Bottom line is, get involved it's fun.

Photo:

For those who miss the snow (or the elk) here's a photo from Joanne Travers.
It was taken in Denver (her sister's friend's backyard!)..
TBM members, let me know if you want a copy of the original (2560X1920). It would make a neat screen wallpaper.
