Program:
Today's presentation was by the Red Cross. Elaine Ordonez and Kathy Conetta spoke about the constant need for blood and blood products. Elaine runs the North Shore Donor Center over at Rosewood Drive. Kathy was saved by blood she received from donors to the Red Cross.
Kathy's story is scary as she discovered her illness quite by chance. Feeling flu like symptoms one day she called her doctor who thought she simply had a cold. The sickness continued and when Kathy was tested it was discover she did have something wrong. Something seriously wrong and it turned out she had developed pneumonia on the brain, which ultimately led to liver failure. Over 9 months, while Kathy waited a liver transplant she needed 65 units of blood just to keep her alive. Without donors she would not be here today.
Elaine explained that all it takes is a little time to donate. Too few people do make the effort. Did you know that one-pint of blood can help up to 3 people. Imagine the difference you could make in someone's life.
