The Tri-Town RotaNews - November 1, 2006

Rotarians O'er the World, You Lead the Way!

From small beginnings, great thoughts grew:
Chicago's shorefront saw the opening day.
Two, three, a hundred, thousands knew
Their hopes for service as a theme would lead the way.

Love, work and service, said the sages, held the keys
To human progress, peace and happiness.
Soon, many more from lands across the seas
Joined to create the vast, wide effort we now bless.

Now, three small towns in Massachusetts fields
Contribute to this global service quest,
Believing each small act of kindness yields
Torrential good in places east and west.

In future years we'll build upon this base
To help our children, youth, adults and aging in the fray
Towards harmony, with knowledge, health and hope before each face.
Rotarians o'er the world, you lead the way!

Commissioned to commemorate the visit of Donna Jean Wayman, Rotary International District Governor, District 7930, to the Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton Rotary Club, Massachusetts, USA, on September 6, 2006.

President John brought the meeting to order and Joe Carroll, provided the blessing, using a quote from the journalist, Edward Murrow.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

There were no visitors or guests today.

Make Ups:

There were no make up cards today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until November 15 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Not only were Happy Dollars collected by fill-in Sergeant at Arms, Denver Wallace, he also fined anyone not wearing a Rotary pin or name tag!

  • Harry Martin again reminded everyone of the "November special"!

  • Peter McAllister admitted to being a bit late himself ---the final score to the soccer season 16-1-1; and now he's heading off to Lake Placid to see some Hockey!

  • Linda Parker was happy; she rented out her last apartment.

  • John Plate just returned from France where he happened to meet a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
Click here to visit Irina Bobrovitskaya's website.

  • Oscar Padjen was sad that Joe Carroll's team, Northwestern, didn't win but was elated that Oscar's alma mater, Michigan, triumphed.

  • Bernie Creeden said he was late, as well, and can't find his pin---but he's glad he's going to see the Celtics play that night.

Raffle:

Bob Murphy and John Plate could not locate the Queen of Hearts; the jackpot grows!

Announcements:

  • Gretchen Marks announced that she was collecting items for the Thanksgiving baskets from members after the meeting and also she would be accepting them NEXT WEEK (11/8), as well. (Please refer to list of suggested goods for baskets - click here.)
A total of 6 baskets will be prepared, with the Club purchasing the turkeys. After reviewing the preliminary bags just received, Gretchen suggested the baskets could use additional juices and nuts.

  • Denver Wallace has secured 4 Mile Village again for the Club's Christmas Party which will be December 9 at 7pm. It will be pot luck with a Yankee Swap.

  • Todd Darling, as Chairman of the nominating committee, presented the nominations for the 2007-2008 Rotary year of Janet Larson as President-Elect (2008-2009), Jeff Kruck as Vice President, Jan Sinclair as Secretary, Bill Shannon as Treasurer, and Eden Hutt and Derek Scialdone as directors with 3 year terms.

  • Bob Courtlangus presented to the Club his Rotary card signed by all members. (Let's hope that everyone remembered to sign!!!!)

  • Janet Larson challenged every member to utilize their "Be My Guest" card and invite a friend to Rotary over the next month.

  • Gretchen Marks says the Box Top Thrift Shop is in need of fall and winter apparel as well as knick knacks. They're selling our donations on consignment helping us add to our own TBM Foundation.

Click for a list of items that will be accepted.

Program:

Jen Osmani, who is the Manager of the Salem Five Bank in Middleton and a new member, presented her classification speech to the Club. Jen's maiden name was Wells and she grew up in Winthrop. She was planning on a career in physical therapy but decided on banking and has been in that profession for 20 years. She worked for Citizens Bank but has been with Salem Five for 6 months now. Jen has been married for 19 years, lives in Lynn, and has 2 children, a daughter named Hannah, and a son named Ryad, and also a dog who is part springer/part lab, called Fenway. Since her husband is a waiter and works nights, Jen doesn't have much time for many hobbies outside her family. She says she's learning much about Rotary.
