Rotarians O'er the World, You Lead the Way!
From small beginnings, great thoughts grew:
Chicago's shorefront saw the opening day.
Two, three, a hundred, thousands knew
Their hopes for service as a theme would lead the way.
Love, work and service, said the sages, held the keys
To human progress, peace and happiness.
Soon, many more from lands across the seas
Joined to create the vast, wide effort we now bless.
Now, three small towns in Massachusetts fields
Contribute to this global service quest,
Believing each small act of kindness yields
Torrential good in places east and west.
In future years we'll build upon this base
To help our children, youth, adults and aging in the fray
Towards harmony, with knowledge, health and hope before each face.
Rotarians o'er the world, you lead the way!
Commissioned to commemorate the visit of Donna Jean Wayman, Rotary International District Governor, District 7930, to the Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton Rotary Club, Massachusetts, USA, on September 6, 2006.

- Harry Martin reminds all Rotary members of the November "special"!!!!!
- Bernie Creeden was happy that 61% voted for the new elementary school issue; unfortunately, he's sad because 65% was needed to get it to pass!

- Joe Carroll was happy as well.
- Bob Was said that now that weddings are over, he has to go back to work!
- Peter McAllister claimed that, although his son, Kevin, got hit, Kevin's team did win.

- Bill Shannon announced that it was his 67th birthday 2 days prior, and contributed $67 to the TBM fund. The Club gave him a Belated - but Rousing - rendition of "Happy Birthday".

Program:
Bob Was introduced our speaker, Carol Decker, Sanctuary Director of the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. Carol became Acting Director of the Sanctuary in 1993 and is now Director. She spoke of how Mass Audubon was founded in the late 1800's by a well-to-do Boston woman who was trying to stop the slaughter of birds whose feathers were being used to ornament hats worn by women in those days. She and other founders of the organization named it Massachusetts Audubon Society, in honor of the famous naturalist & painter, John J Audubon. Mass Audubon succeeded in banning the trade in wild-bird feathers and helped pass the Migratory Bird Act in 1916. Mass Audubon never joined The Audubon Society but stayed independent.
In 1951, the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary was purchased from the Proctor Estate and is Mass Audubon's largest sanctuary with 2267 acres and over 10 miles of trails. The Sanctuary's goals include Education, Conservation, and Advocacy. Issues include: water withdrawal (Ipswich River in 1997 was 1of the most endangered rivers in the US), decline in water (in summer, municipal town usage grows), and invasive plants. One of the most important jobs of the Sanctuary is to connect people to Nature. Carol described the various program and events that are in place for children, family, and adults. She encourages people to become members of Mass Audubon, to visit the website, www.massaudubon.org, and of course, to visit the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary.
