The Tri-Town RotaNews - September 20, 2006

Rotarians O'er the World, You Lead the Way!

From small beginnings, great thoughts grew:
Chicago's shorefront saw the opening day.
Two, three, a hundred, thousands knew
Their hopes for service as a theme would lead the way.

Love, work and service, said the sages, held the keys
To human progress, peace and happiness.
Soon, many more from lands across the seas
Joined to create the vast, wide effort we now bless.

Now, three small towns in Massachusetts fields
Contribute to this global service quest,
Believing each small act of kindness yields
Torrential good in places east and west.

In future years we'll build upon this base
To help our children, youth, adults and aging in the fray
Towards harmony, with knowledge, health and hope before each face.
Rotarians o'er the world, you lead the way!

Commissioned to commemorate the visit of Donna Jean Wayman, Rotary International District Governor, District 7930, to the Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton Rotary Club, Massachusetts, USA, on September 6, 2006.

President John brought the meeting to order and Joe Carroll provided blessing asking us all to think about the meaning of morality.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

There were no visitors or guests today.

Make Ups:

Bob Luscinski made up at and

Joanne Travers made up at

Bill Shannon made up somewhere in Alaska

If you missed today's meeting, you have until October 4 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy Dollars were collected by Sergeant at Arms, Jeff Kruck, who first reminded all members that they have only 1 WEEK LEFT to sign new members' books.

  • Jan Sinclair gave happy dollars because she was excited to view an ultrasound of her grandchild.
  • John Plate claimed that he saw 2 fellow Rotarians, specifically Janet Larson and Oscar Padjen, doing some stunts in "Heelys" roller shoes in Angelica's parking lot recently. (For the record, the accused deny such a claim!) What is this fascination with funny shoes with wheels in the heels?

  • Linda Parker gave $6 for the "bellyful" of laughs she had a recent concert.

  • Gretchen Marks said that The Club received its first check from The Box Top.

  • Bob Courtlangus was happy to take a trip to Long Island.

  • Ira Singer gave $ to assist Oscar & Janet in their "Heely" stunts.

  • Jen Osmani was happy for the great weather.

  • Harry Martin had $4 for sustaining membership
    - Again his motto is "Give Early & Give Often."

Raffle:

No one won today as Bob Courtlangus and Eden Hutt failed to find "Barbara", or the Queen of Hearts in the deck.

Announcements:

(No program scheduled for today so President John focused on "rest of year" events and programs)

  • October 4th is Rotary Day at The Topsfield Fair. Gretchen Marks passed out parking passes to everyone present.
    ***
Please wear your ROTARY PIN and go through River Gate when parking that day.

  • The 27th running of the TBM Fall Foliage Classic race on October 15 is coming SOON! Sponsors are needed; please think who you would want to approach & ask. It is one of The Club's main fund raisers. Sponsors should make out checks to the TBM Foundation, which is a tax deductible contribution.

  • We reviewed the meeting schedule through the end of 2006. See the schedule on this page.

  • Finally, President John raised the subject of Angelica's raising the cost of the meals by $0.75/person. There was discussion as to whether the Club's budget should absorb the difference or whether the members should be assessed an additional $1.00/person increase. Bill Shannon pointed out that the some of the money collected above & beyond the price of the meals have gone toward leadership/seminar training for officers and members. President John finally brought the motion to a vote that the cost of the meal be increased by $1.00; the motion passed with 15 voting in favor and 2 voting against the proposal.
