The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 30, 2006

President John brought the meeting to order and Joe Carroll offered the blessing by quoting from some of Nelson Mandela's reflections.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Brad Swanson, guest of Harry Martin, joined us today, as did Bob Courtlangus, guest of Janet Larson.

Make Ups:

There were no makeup cards today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until September 13 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

  • Bob Was was sad because he never thought that he would be so happy to see gas prices at $2.72!

  • Bernie Creeden wasn't sure if he was happy OR sad----School starts the following Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • Harry Martin gave $5 and said he was just plain happy.

  • Gretchen Marks is happy that we assisted the Rotary Club in Argentina.

  • Oscar Padjen is happy that Harry is happy!

  • Peter McAllister found out that his son, Kevin, made the JV team for soccer. He is also happy that Harry Martin can't reach him via email because somehow Harry got on Peter's SPAM list. (Harry did remind Peter that he could still be reached via the phone!)

  • Bill Shannon is excited about his upcoming trip to Alaska.

  • Gary Sinclair was happy to be sitting and sharing a table with his best friend Bill Shannon.

Raffle:

Janet Larson and Gretchen Marks searched for the Queen of Hearts but both of them came up empty.

Announcements:

  • Peter McAllister reminded the group that TBM Fall Foliage Classic race is on October 15 and he will contact the Boxford town officials regarding the date. Per Gretchen, the T-Shirts are on order. A list of vendors, who also make great sponsors, and also sponsors will be made available. Please start asking sponsors now. Joe Long will prepare the advertising for the event. Sponsors should make checks out to the TBM Foundation, which would be a tax deductible contribution.

  • President John announced that the Rotary Club of Peabody would be having their Annual Golf Tournament at The Meadows on September 26--anyone interested should contact John.He then asked Todd Darling to announce our 2007 golf tournament date ---that will be on June 11, 2007. Please mark your calendars now!

  • Gretchen Marks summed up one of the Club's most recent international projects --the purchase of 500 greeting cards to assist another Rotary Club located in Argentina. That Club, which then can sell the cards either as note cards or as greeting cards, will use the proceeds to help buy toys for poor children in the area. There was a reminder that we have an ongoing community project with the BoxTop Community Store. Club members are asked to donate items and the Club will get a portion of the proceeds for any goods that are sold. Please give items to Gretchen or John and they will take them to the store and apply to the TBM account.

Click for a list of items that will be accepted.

  • President John then passed out the "Club Courtesies of Rotary" notes and reminded everyone that next Wednesday District Governor Donna Wayman would be visiting the Club. He pointed out several items, such as everyone needs to stand when the governor is introduced and also when she (the governor) is thanked for her remarks. President John encouraged a strong attendance on our part next week.

  • The Lynnfield Rotary BBQ which will be held on September 12 from 5 pm to 7 pm is fast approachingl. Chicken and dogs are on the menu. Anyone interested in going contact Harry. Attending will count as a make up.

Program:

There was no program today.
