The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 23, 2006

President John brought the meeting to order and Joe Carroll provided the blessing.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Jen Osmani, a guest of Jan Sinclair, joined us today, as did Andy Rehault from the Danvers Club.

Make Ups:

There were no makeup cards today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until September 6 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy dollars were collected from stand in Sergeant at Arms Linda "Ma" Parker. A lot of silence today as dollars simply flowed out of pockets and into the pot.

  • Bob Murphy made a contribution.

  • Bob Was announced that his son is getting married this weekend and contributed happy dollars.

  • Bob Murphy told him to take them back as he'll need the cash.

  • Jan Sinclair is happy to be back in law school.

  • Gary Sinclair was happy that he has decided to start charging for legal advice.

  • Andy Rehault matched Murphy's contribution.

  • Oscar Padjen gave for the heck of it.

  • Harry Martin reminds all that the August specials for RI donations are still available.
Propose a member in August get 100 Foundation Recognition Points. Have them join before the end of September and get another 100 Foundation Recognition Points plus a $100 to your Sustaining Member account.
You can also make your Sustaining Member contribution by August 31 and get a matching number of Foundation Recognition Points.

  • Todd Darling is happy he can stop feeling like a vagabond and can move back into the house after some kitchen work.

  • Peter McAllister is really proud that he and his softball team won the regular season with a 16 and 0 record. Now for the playoffs.

  • Gretchen Marks was happy to see "The root beer Kid" on NECN proclaim that his favorite root beer was made by Harry Martin's son Rob at Mercury Brewing.

  • Bill Shannon is happy to announce that his dad has left hospice and has been moved into a long term care facility. He's been a bit feisty as he bit one of the nurses.

  • Denver Wallace had a sad dollar as his grand daughter and her horse had a bad weekend at a Vermont meet.

  • Joanne Travers was happy that school is starting up in just a short time.

  • John Plate contributed as did Eden Hutt who was happy for his Topsfield Softball team discovering it was okay to have a beer after the game.

  • Joe Long did not have anything to do with corrupting the Senators.

Raffle:

Denver Wallace got a chance to try as did Jen Osmani but there was no winner today.

Announcements:

  • Gene Hastings Sent Harry a notice that Camp Rotary is in search of 4 new board of directors members. Interested please let Harry Martin know.

  • The 27th running of the TBM Fall Foliage Classic on October 15 is fast approaching and we are sprinting to get things done. Sponsors are needed. Sign up forms and runner registrations will be ready shortly. Start thinking about who you can approach for sponsorship. This is one of our biggest fund raisers lets all make the day a great success! Gilly will be helping out this year saving the Club some much needed dollars.

  • The next BOD meeting will be prior to the September 6th meeting as our District Governor Donna Wayman will be here to join us.

  • The Lynnfield Rotary BBQ which will be held on September 12 from 5 pm to 7 pm is fast approaching as well. Chicken and dogs are on the menu. Anyone interested in going contact Harry. Attending will count as a make up.

  • Don't forget to bring items for the BoxTop Community Store. Give them to Gretchen at a meeting or drop them off at Gretchen's house. This is an ongoing effort where the Club will get part of the proceeds for the goods that are sold.

Click for a list of items that will be accepted.

Program:

Al Craig, General Manager of the Topsfield Fair and longstanding TBM Rotarian, spoke to the club today about the Topsfield Fair. Al said that the most commonly asked questions at the Fair include: "Where are the restrooms?", "Where's the giant pumpkin?", and "What time do you start?"

A lot of people have the misconception that Al's job starts and ends with the 10 day Fair, not realizing the huge amount of planning/organizing that goes into the full time job. Opening up on a Friday night, which is Topsfield night or "First Fair" night is a fairly recent development and includes the local community.

Al showed a great video of the fair which included the Midway and rides, the parade, shows offered such as The Bellamy Brothers and The Flying Wallendas , exhibits, rodeo, barrel racing, car racing, and agriculturalpvestock exhibits. The video reminded us that the Topsfield Fair, which began in 1818, is the oldest agricultural fair in America. This year's dates are September 29 (Friday night) and then September 30-October 9. Chubby Checker and The Mounties will be among the 2006 entertainment features. October 6 will be Rotary Day at The Fair.

Al started as a volunteer at the Fair in 1979 and in 1986, became manager. He was responsible for bringing in large name Country Western & Rock Stars to the Fair, including Johnny Cash. The Topsfield Fair has a great reputation among the nation's fairs and is considered to be in the top 50 in attendance. After the fair has ended, All will be judging in several other fair programs, including ones in Alaska and Minnesota.

At the end of the presentation, John thanked Al, not only for a great talk, but always remembering the Rotary Club at Topsfield Fair time; and also he praised Al's strong practicing belief in service above self.

Introduce a friend to TBM and ask them to come to a meeting. See you next week...
