Program:
Al Craig, General Manager of the Topsfield Fair and longstanding TBM Rotarian, spoke to the club today about the Topsfield Fair. Al said that the most commonly asked questions at the Fair include: "Where are the restrooms?", "Where's the giant pumpkin?", and "What time do you start?"
A lot of people have the misconception that Al's job starts and ends with the 10 day Fair, not realizing the huge amount of planning/organizing that goes into the full time job. Opening up on a Friday night, which is Topsfield night or "First Fair" night is a fairly recent development and includes the local community.
Al showed a great video of the fair which included the Midway and rides, the parade, shows offered such as The Bellamy Brothers and The Flying Wallendas , exhibits, rodeo, barrel racing, car racing, and agriculturalpvestock exhibits. The video reminded us that the Topsfield Fair, which began in 1818, is the oldest agricultural fair in America. This year's dates are September 29 (Friday night) and then September 30-October 9. Chubby Checker and The Mounties will be among the 2006 entertainment features. October 6 will be Rotary Day at The Fair.
Al started as a volunteer at the Fair in 1979 and in 1986, became manager. He was responsible for bringing in large name Country Western & Rock Stars to the Fair, including Johnny Cash. The Topsfield Fair has a great reputation among the nation's fairs and is considered to be in the top 50 in attendance. After the fair has ended, All will be judging in several other fair programs, including ones in Alaska and Minnesota.
At the end of the presentation, John thanked Al, not only for a great talk, but always remembering the Rotary Club at Topsfield Fair time; and also he praised Al's strong practicing belief in service above self.
Introduce a friend to TBM and ask them to come to a meeting. See you next week...
