Program:
Bill Sargent, a member of the Ipswich Rotary Club, spoke to our Club today about the recent Ipswich flooding and bridge problems. Bill explained that recently in the Gulf, the 80 degree warm water moved further East and stalled weather over the US. This contributed to the constant rainy weather that the US experienced this past spring and it compares to weather we had in 1938. Bill showed the Club very interesting slides of the Ipswich River @ Mother's Day and its bridges. (Ipswich has the oldest and the 4th oldest stone arch bridge in the country).
3 out of 4 Ipswich bridges and 50% of the businesses had to close due to the flooding. Bill claims that the increased number of developments have caused more and more runoff and that bridges act more like dams at times. He showed a picture of a fire in a building near the Choate Bridge and work being done on the bridge itself. There was discussion on the benefits vs. disadvantages of some of the bridges/dams. Bill believes that some of the FEMA money that Ipswich will receive will go toward a feasibility study of the Sylvania Dam. Bill discussed his most recent book that he wrote: Writing Naturally: A Memoir. A Question and answer period followed.
Introduce a friend to TBM and ask them to come to a meeting. See you next week...
