The Tri-Town RotaNews - July 12, 2006

President John brought his first official meeting to order and Joe Carroll read the following blessing.

We thank Thee for food and remember the hungry.
We thank Thee for health and remember the sick.
We thank Thee for friends and remember the friendless.
We thank Thee for freedom and remember the enslaved.
May these remembrances stir us to service. That Thy gifts to us may be used for others. Amen.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Visitors today were Chandler Noyes from Haverhill and Marie Gagnon from Salem, welcome and thank you for joining us today.

Make Ups:

There were no Make-Up cards today.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until July 26 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy dollars were collected from Sergeant at Arms for 2006-2007, Jeff Kruck.

  • Jeff gave for a fine job.

  • Bob Murphy is planning on going to Bill Shannon's barber and get the same hair cut.

  • Jim Fitzgerald is happy to be back.

  • Oscar Padjen is getting in line behind Bob Murphy to get his ears lowered too.

  • Joe Carroll is happy to be here.

  • Bob Luscinski gave to Spencer.

  • Ira Singer gave an extra dollar as he was happy to not see any of John Plate's golf clubs show up for the meeting.

  • Peter McAllister gave Jeff some cash for socks.

  • Gretchen Marks had happy dollars saying Jeff doesn't need socks.

  • John Plate was happy to be here.

Raffle:

No winner today as the joker remains in Peter's pocket.

Announcements:

  • President John received an e-mail from the north Reading Club as they are planning an outing to the North Shore Spirit game on Tuesday July 25th at 6:00PM. $25 per person includes the price of the game, a meal and drinks. The group is limited to 40 so commit early. Speaking from experience the games really are a good take.

  • Collection for our July community service project will continue next week. Bring in items that can be resold at the BoxTop Community Store. The Club, thanks to Gretchen has an account. We'll earn cash for selling our stuff on consignment. This is a continuing effort that will prove beneficial for all involved. Gretchen will compile a list of items that can and can not be sold.

Program:

Lakshmi Sirois of Ipswich spoke to us today about the troubles in Darfur, Sudan and the ongoing genocide that is being carried out by the present government. Lakshmi described the atrocities as the worst humanitarian conflict of the 21st century. The CARE web site states, "The Darfur conflict erupted in early 2003. Fighting among various factions has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced more than 2 million, most escaping to larger towns where they stay in camps for "internally displaced people," and some crossing the border into Chad, where they live in refugee camps, straining local resources. Attacks on civilians during the conflict have been brutal and include burning homes, killing and rape."

A pretty sad commentary as the majority of the world seems to turn its interest elsewhere and a relatively small population lends a hand in this desperate effort to stop the insanity.

Politics, religion, tribalism, greed and environmental problems are but a few of the issues that are fueling the problem. For more information please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfur_conflict and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfur.

At the end of the meeting President John rang the bell.

Introduce a friend to TBM and ask them to come to a meeting. See you next week...
