The Tri-Town RotaNews - June 21, 2006

"Rotary is the golden strand in the cable of international friendship"

"The future is not a gift -- it is an achievement."

President Peter brought meeting to order and Joe Carroll provided the blessing.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Visitors today were Bob Courtlangus, Senior District Executive of the Boys Scouts and Renee Merritt from Life Line Screening..

Make Ups:

There were no Make-Up cards today, but Jan has a list of those who worked and/or played at the golf tournament.

If you missed today's meeting, you have until July 5 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy dollars were collected from the group.

  • Janet Larson was happy for her travels to Chicago to visit her Mom.

  • Joe Long is happy over the end of the Little League season.

  • Jan Sinclair, between phone calls, is happy about her impending vacation...this time with Gary.

  • Gary Sinclair is happy about Jan's business phone call.

  • Joe Carroll is just plain happy.

  • Peter McAllister is happy that his bell ringing days are coming to an end.

  • Harry Martin is sad over the lack of a response from the non guessers to the "who is that man?"

  • Bernie Creedon is sad over the end of school and the empty halls.

  • Bob Was is happy over his trip to New Orleans.

Raffle:

mystery man
aka
Roderick McSwankay
Bob Courtlangus was asked to draw the first number and drew his own but to no avail. Denver Wallace also had a chance but couldn't find the joker..

Peter remains in the deck.

Announcements:

  • Peter McAllister read a thank you from Nancy Merrill our "Citizen of the Year" award recipient.

  • Bill Shannon announced that $135 in gifts have been donated to the Club in memory of Dave Twitchell.

  • Gretchen Marks is in the process of signing the Club up with the Box Top Consignment store. Not only is it a great way to get rid of stuff you don't need anymore and that others could use. The items sold also provide an income for the Club too! Starting July 12 we will be collecting items to be sold, stay tuned for more details.

  • No meeting July 5th.

Harry Martin continues a Rotarical question.

Who is that guy? The member, who should know, doesn't and will be fined accordingly and incrementally as time marches on. President Peter put it this way "The longer you wait my Rotarian friend the more you owe Spencer"...stay tuned.

The tree at the right carries his name.

He was a personal friend of Paul Harris who might have called him Sir.

If you think you know the answer, send an e-mail to Harry who will verify it for you.

Corylus avellana 'Contorta'

  • This lady was a contemporary of our mystery Rotarian.

  • Click the picture for a larger version.

  • Extra points (the points don't really matter) if you can tell what it is a picture of.

Muriel Ostriche

Our mystery Rotarian wrote:

"I have been a pretty constant visitor to the White House for twenty years. I have met all the Presidents during that period and have had unique opportunities for forming first- hand impressions of the illustrious American statesmen who have ruled the destinies of the States from Theodore Roosevelt sown to the present occupant of the presidential chair. With more than one of these remarkable men I am proud to say I have been on terms of friendship.

Mystery Rotarian and Golf:

  • He was hired as a caddy at the Musselburgh Golf Course, a job he enjoyed very much.

  • He had taken tea or played golf with Presidents Wilson, Roosevelt, Taft, Harding and Coolidge.

  • A golf course carries his name.

Program:

Renee Merritt spoke to the club today about the benefits of preventative health screenings as a measure to combat stroke. Simply and painless tests can be done to assess and identify your risk of stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease and osteoporosis. Individuals should consider looking into their health screenings around the age of 40. For information and to locate a screening time near you please visit, www.lifelinescreening.com.

At the end of the meeting Peter rang the bell so softly that Harry asked that him to ring it Lauder so that everyone could hear it. Peter said "The show must go on" and complied. Cheers all.

A Light For Future Generations

"Go on in a way that you are going. Leave your lights burning behind you,
so that others coming after you may benefit thereby. Perchance, your boy
or girl passing that way someday, may point to a lamp you left and say..
gratefully and with pride..

"My Dad left that light burning"

Ask a friend to come to lunch next week. See you next week...
