Todd Darling had an announcement indicating that the Ipswich Country Club on April 24 was sponsoring a 3 hour seminar (9am-12pm) showing people who were interested in how to run a golf tournament. In the afternoon, free golf would be offered at the club. Don't forget - June 12 is our GOLF TOURNAMENT - START ASKING FOR GOLFERS AND SPONSORS!!

Program:

Our speaker today was Bob Kuzara from the Center for Business Planning -

Bob's topic was on "Globalization - How it Affects Business Cost Effectiveness & You"

Bob indicates that the technology is here for globalization, that the secrets to driving more value into people's business is through outsourcing and it is important to demystify the outsourcing game. He claims that when jobs are created overseas, even more jobs yet are created within the US. Businesses must focus to outsource in order to win, not to shrink. The best companies are the best collaborators. The 20th century was made up of US companies; the 21st century will be made up mostly of Asian companies.

Businesses should spend more time on business goals, and track outcomes. Businesses should achieve a "best practices" approach company wide: - Outsource what you don't do well - Do what you do well (Brand your identity)

Operating costs will go down and vital resources will go up. Core business will thrive.

Examples of outsourcing include: customer service, HR, tax preparation, restaurant reservations, taking doctor's appointments, & receiving personal mail.

Program:

Gretchen Marks introduced our speaker, Thelma Kenerson, volunteer staff member of The Box-Top Consignment and Thrift Shop. The proceeds from the shop go to the Topsfield-Boxford Community Club and contributions from the club support flu clinic staffing, Councils on Aging in Topsfield and Boxford, Hospice, Tri-Town Council, HAWK, the ABC House and other local charities. Thelma, who moved from Saugus to Topsfield, has been an area resident for 35 years.

Thelma explained that the Topsfield-Boxford Community Club started 88 years ago by preserving food for WW1 and then raising money to pay for a nurse. The building which the Shop is located used to be a carpenter shop and the majority of help is that of volunteers. $30,000-$35,000 is raised to be given to charities. One side of the store is thrift (100% profit) and the other side is consignment (the seller gets a portion of the proceeds returned to him/her). $3 bag sales are very popular and she advised that people get there early! Also, a group, such as Rotary, can set up an account at the shop and, if an item is sold under that group name, it would be added to the group's account.
