The Tri-Town RotaNews - March 22, 2006

President Peter brought the meeting to order and Joe Carroll asked that we remember those who need our help.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Joe Long invited Liz White from Middleton and Gretchen Marks had Sheila Kelly of the Topsfield COA join us today. Welcome to you both please come again.

Make Ups:

Joanne Travers made up at

If you missed today's meeting, you have until April 5 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

  • Eden Hutt, was excused for being late due to his service above self as he brought his personal lap top and video equipment for today's speaker.

  • Harry Martin began the last quarter push to get us over the top with respect to sustaining membership. We are hopeful to be the number one club again with respect to Foundation support.

  • Peter McAllister sounds like Fred Cusak of Bruins old as he proudly tells of son Kevin's exploits on the ice. His Bantam 8th grader team won in a recent tournement.

  • Joe Carroll is proud of his Grand Daughter as she spent her Spring Break helping build homes in the hurricane ravaged state of Louisiana.

  • Bob Was was happy that Eden Hutt pulled through in the clutch and brought his equipment.

  • Linda Parker was happy over the great showing at the Scholars Den last week. We need to get out more.

  • Joanne Travers gave a worried mom dollar for her son Matt's panic over his new haircut this morning.

  • Denver Wallace couldn't make change and anteed up a five dollar bill. Helen, you're cooking again tonight.

  • Gretchen Marks was happy for Sheila Kelly's visit. BTW Sheila was a very active member in the Beverly Club before taking on the COA Directors position in Topsfield. Welcome to the area Sheila!

  • Ira Singer was happy about the Scholars Den as well.

  • Oscar Padjen slipped some cash into the pot.

Raffle:

Today the cards didn't work out for Bob Was or Joanne Travers.

Announcements:

Golf Tourney June 12th.

President Peter McAllister made some announcements,

  • RYLA is coming up in May.

  • The District Meeting this year will be held in Hyannis.

  • Joanne Travers just returned from India and presented a banner from the Bombay Club. Over 300 members are active. Over 180 attended the meeting Joanne visited. 30 projects are under way and she had the opportunity to meet an Ear Nose and Throat specialist who has a dozen cochlear implants to his credit. Opportunity abounds for International service.

  • The Golf committee reminds everyone that the golf tourney is coming up on June 12, 2006 at the Ipswich Country Club. Cost is $150 per player. Typically player pays up $225 per person to play this beautiful course. Tell your friends and co workers as it would be great to sell this event out. The web site will have golfer and sponsor sign up forms available for download. Volunteers are requested to come forward and help make this year's event the most successful ever. Contact Joe Long or Todd Darling.

  • A special thank you goes out to Barbara for her baked goodies. Eden's cheeks were stuffed when he walked out the door. Jen check his pockets too I think he was hoarding stuff for Dave Bunker as well!

Program:

Today we were entertained and enlighten by one of RI's Ambassadorial Scholars, Matthias Raphael Prause, from Berlin Germany. Matthias was born in East Berlin prior to the wall coming down. The day he and his family walked across the border was truly the beginning of a new life.

Matthias is sponsored by the Bad Hamburg von der hohe Rotary Club, part of RI District 1810. He attends Harvard University where he is studying international law and dealing with alternative dispute resolution through mediation, arbitration and negotiation. Matthias plans to travel to Mozambique to offer his assistance at an orphanage.

He explained that Germany is a country of 82 million people and the population is contracting as his generation, "just doesn't like children". He misses his German beer "vas Steiner". We saw the "fake beaches' on the Rhine River, we were told to visit Eltz Castle if were in the neighborhood, saw remnants of "Check Point Charlie". Learned of the Parliament building and how its dome was designed by British Architect Sir Norman Foster.

Matthias thank you for your enthusiasm, your service above self and your humor. All the best.
