The Tri-Town RotaNews - February 22, 2006

President Peter McAllister took charge of the meeting.

Eden Hutt's son Jack did an excellent job of leading the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Joe Carroll provided the blessing and words of wisdom.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

We had a full house today!

Visiting Rotarians included Jeff Dickinson from the Beverly Club, Cynthia Funchion from the Manchester-Essex Club (also Derek Scialdone's guest), Tim Madigan from the Danvers Club and Andrew Philips from the Lynn Club.

Bob Murphy brought his grandson, Matt Brady. Eden Hutt brought his sons Jack and Theo.

Janet Larson's guest was Jay Seibert.

Our speaker today was Randy Larson (Janet's husband). Randy brought Fred Cummings as his guest.

Make Ups:

Janet Larson made up at on February 9,

Program:

Denver Wallace introduced Randy Larson to the TBM Rotary Club as the speaker for that week. Randy is the Scout Executive, or as Denver put it, the "CEO" of the Yankee Clipper Council Boy Scouts of America. Randy has been a professional Scouter for over 28 years and, as a youth, earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He has served as Scout Executive for 4 different councils, first in Grand Junction CO, then in Columbia MO, then in Columbus OH and now in the Yankee Clipper Council in MA.

Randy shared with the Club the Council's most recent annual report, as well as an article on a special needs youth from Middleton who recently received the Eagle Scout rank. Also, Randy spoke on a recent study conducted by Harris & Associates which indicates that a high proportion of boys in America today choose to do what is wrong, such as cheating on homework, getting drunk, using drugs, shoplifting, etc. The study showed that 84% who were Scouts as boys, especially five or more years, felt that Scouting helped instill values in them that they still utilized as adults today and that they were more likely than non-Scouts to assume a leadership role in school organizations and to make the most honest (not the easiest) decisions.

Randy talked about how Scouting methods have had to change/adapt over the years - although the values Scouting promotes remain constant. Girls, as well as women, are now part of the Boy Scout movement, in both the Exploring program and leadership roles. The Boy Scouts have various challenges to meet now and in the future. Fundraising, the competition with so many other activities/ events in a child's life, and the efforts to remain current in an ever changing society are all topics of concern for his organization.

The Tri-Town RotaNews - March 1, 2006

President Peter was in transit so President Elect John Plate took the gavel and rang the bell. Joe Carroll gave the blessing asking that we remember those who are less fortunate.

Paul Brigham was visiting today, great to see you Paul!

President Peter arrived at 12:20 and used his Presidential powers to pardon all late arrivals for the day. Jan Sinclair was working with Barbara to straighten out the meal choice which took at little time to decipher.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Paul Brigham our dear friend and former member, now a member of the Wolfboro, NH Club, visited us today..

Make Ups:

No makeup cards were received today.
If you missed today's meeting, you have until March 15 to complete a makeup.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy dollars were collected by SAA Dave Bunker.

  • Gary Sinclair was happy to still be standing. Seems there was a scheduling mix up as he was to drive Jan to Eden's office for her appointment. Gary blanked out and Jan walked from her office to see the good doctor. Someone should probably give Gary's office a call to see if he's okay on Monday.

  • Eden Hutt was happy for the assistance of Todd Darling and Linda Parker last week. Seems the duo were very helpful with Eden's boys Theo and Jack at last weeks meeting. Rumor has it that Todd and Linda are starting a day care.

  • Janet Larson is happy as she is headed for Arizona next week.

  • Jan Sinclair is just ecstatic over her car pool arrangement.

  • Al Craig is happy for his visits to a number of Florida fairs that don't compare to Topsfield.

  • John Plate is happy for Paul Brigham being with us today.

  • Paul Brigham was happy for his visit too!

  • Linda Parker fed Spencer in Paul's honor as well.

  • Joe Carroll was just plain happy.

  • Jeff Kruck donated.

  • Harry Martin asks that we please remember our sustaining member contributions and please make them early and often.

  • Joanne Travers is happy to be a little more than 10 years old.

  • Todd Darling was happy.

  • Dave Bunker was happy for his family trip to Costa Rica.

  • Peter McAllister was happy that John Plate started the meeting and for his recent trip with Kevin to Myrtle Beach. The golf was great and the kid beat him twice.

Raffle:

The cards were no where to be seen so Dave Bunker and Al Craig will draw next week.

Give Blood

Announcements:

  • President Peter announced that the Red Cross Blood Drive, sponsored by TBM will be next week on the 7th, 9th and 11th at the Red Cross facility on 114. Be prepared for your donor e-mails. Give or get someone to give and receive 100 PHF points from the Club.

  • April 8 is the Topsfield Expo held at the Proctor School. The event is very well attended and is a great way for us to show the people of Topsfield what we're all about.

  • Todd Darling announced a thank you to Bill Shannon and Jan Sinclair as they have stepped up to the plate for this year RYLA program interviews.

  • March 15 will be visiting the Scholars Den, formerly the Ram's Inn at Essex Aggie.

  • Gary Sinclair announced that on March 27 there will be a lecture at Masco from 7:00-9:00 PM on parenting and teenagers. Another event is also in the works directed at impaired driving and the establishment of Melanie's Law. Melanie's grandfather will be the speaker.

  • Be thinking about the golf tournament planning. Want to help? Please make it known. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Let's work together to make 2006 the best yet.

Program:

No speaker today, however Bill Shannon did have a little humor for the group. Imagine driving around the lake in your boat with the trailer still attached!
