The Tri-Town RotaNews - February 2, 2006
President Peter went missing for the moment but called from the road and said "ring that bell". John Plate took control of the opening and did so. Just a little practice for John before July is here. Gretchen Marks gave the blessing. Giving thanks for the Flag, for the Country and for the service we do as Rotarians.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests:
Visitors today included Chandler Noyes from the Haverhill Club, Lisa Roderick from the Wakefield Club and Ambassadorial Scholar Carmen Yip of the Harvard Business School and a resident of Hong Kong.
Make Ups:
No makeup cards were received today.
Fines and Happy Dollars:
Happy dollars were collected by SAA Dave Bunker.
- Joanne Travers was happy for Rotary World and Understanding Month. While on a recent trip to the Dominican Republic she picked up a number of Rotary articles about the good RI is doing in other parts of the world and how RI is making a difference in people's lives.
- Harry Martin donated and just "stretched his legs". Silent suggestions? Please don't forget the Clubs goal for Sustaining Membership this year.
- Derek Scialdone and his bride heard the heartbeat of their new addition! Congratulations you two.
- Peter McAllister only had interest on his late fine for today.
- Bob Luscinski had two bucks, not $200 Barbara, for the return of his bride Virginia. She's coming home from sunny Florida.
- Jan Sinclair had a sad dollar for her veggie pasta last week. After getting a to go package, the mixture leaked all down her outfit and she had to change prior to meeting a client. How was that garlic?
- Ira Singer had a donation for the rest of the story. Seems Ira spoke with the client and the client new Harry so ultimately it was no big deal. The whole leaky situation was all in the name of Rotary.
- Bob Was gave some cash to make the announcement about how nice it was for the Boston Globe to distribute customer's credit card numbers to the sides of the road.
- Silent dollars seem to be ruling currently, come on people share that special moment with a significant other, a friend or the like.
Raffle:
Gretchen Marks picked the 5 of Hearts and Lisa Roderick from the Wakefield Club found the lucky 4 of Hearts. She donated the money to the speaker, Carmen Yip from Hong Kong for use in her rural Chins school project.

Program:
Carmen Yip began her talk by wishing us a happy Chinese New Year.
She is hosted by the Wakefield Rotary Club and was pleasantly surprised to see her sponsor Lisa Roderick in the room. Carmen has focused her community and world service efforts on education, she has taught at the high school level, has helped build a new school in a rural and poor area of China.
She introduced us to the people of Hong Kong. She describes her follow residents as diligent, open minded, adventurous, creative, adaptable to change and diverse. Imagine being a fishing port, being taken over by another country, becoming a major trade port and financial center for the world and then being handed back over to a communist government.
The people of Hong Kong love their holidays and share the influences of their own culture as well as the cultures that have been introduced to them. The Dragon Dance celebration is a major event for them as is Halloween and Christmas. Perhaps people all over the world could take a lesson for the people of Hong Kong?
Even the food has been blessed with mixed influence. They have their traditional dishes but a new trend has been towards "fusion" where flavors for different worlds a combined for a totally new dining experience.
A few facts, Hong Kong is the 11th largest trading economy in the world, it boasts the 6th largest foreign exchange and has Asia's 2nd largest stock market. All this within a section of land one fifth the size of Massachusetts!
Thank for the visit today Carmen and keep up the good work!
