The Tri-Town RotaNews - January 4, 2006

President Peter rang the bell after waiting the arrival of Ira Singer. Nobody is late under the McAllister Administration! Happy New Year Everyone! Joe Carroll provided the blessing asking that we enjoy each others company and remember that all over the world, service organizations like Rotary help provides services to individuals in need. Be proud of the things we do as Rotarians.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

There were no visitors or guests today.

Make Ups:

There were no make-up cards today.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy dollars were collected by SAA Dave Bunker.

  • Eden Hutt wished all a "Happy New Year."

  • Peter McAllister was happy for his recent trip to San Diego. Maureen unfortunately couldn't travel with Peter courtesy of two bulging discs.

  • Joe Long gave a fiver for Eden "the hippy" needing a haircut.

  • Todd Darling wished all a happy new year and is happy to be back to work.

  • Harry Martin congratulates the Club for another banner year a 100% Sustaining Membership. Speaking of banners, the district should be providing banners soon.

  • John Plate is glad to see the Bob Murphy has calmed down considerably.

  • Joanne Travers has a family tradition for swapping gifts over the Christmas holidays. Her husband Paul thought it would be funny to include a certain family member's boat keys as a "gift". Perhaps the gift of humor is the one of the greatest gifts of all.

  • Oscar Padjen had a happy and sad dollar for the "loopy" writing that kids are learning.

  • Joe Carroll gave to the cause and explained that the issue of cursive writing as long been a major education issue. Joe made a wonderful point, "It's more important what you write rather than how you write." Joe and Halcyon recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by having dinner and going to the Pops. Much to their surprise, they had the pleasure of discovering that in addition to family, 27 longtime family friends traveled from near and far (Texas, Washington State, Florida) to honor them. Congratulations!

  • Gary Sinclair was happy for Oscar's elaboration on writing analysis.

  • Jan Sinclair was happy for her daughter's use of a 5 iron, out driving mom and her driver down in Naples.

Raffle:

Bob Murphy and Eden Hutt could not find the Jack of Spades and the pot grows.

Announcements:

  • President Peter read a thank you for the poinsettia's from the Middleton Senior Center. The plants were distributed to meals on wheels recipients and brought into the senior's lives the "true meaning of Christmas."

  • One of the creative classes at Boxford's Spofford School sent us a pile of creative, really creative, thank you notes for the thesauruses Linda Parker and Joe Long distributed. The books enable the kids to write more creatively. Linda are there any extra's? Let's keep up the good work people, great job!!

Webmaster's Note: I think our editor couldn't find his thesauris and therefore couldn't be more creative in his choice of adjectives and adverbs!

  • John Plate received a thank you from the Wheelchair Foundation for our recent contribution.

  • President Peter drank from his "Grand Poh Baa" mug which was presented to him by his staff.

  • Election of club officers and directors for the RI year 2006-2007 will be held at our next meeting, Wednesday Jan 11, 2006

  • There is a RYLA meeting on the 14th at Danversport Yacht Club from 10-12 noon. The RYLA dates have been set for May 12-14, 2006.

  • The District is searching for GSE candidates to venture off to Amsterdam. Doug Holmes of Lexington is the GSE leader. Participants should be non Rotarians between the ages of 25 and 40.

  • There is a potential "Rotary Night" planned at a Lowell Loch Monster hockey game. Stay tuned for details.

Program:

There was no program scheduled for today, but We enjoyed a special spur of the moment presentation regarding the teaching of writing form in the education system in today's world. Oscar Padjen and Joe Carroll thank you your comments, the conversation was extremely interesting. Perhaps we could have more discussion/debate like this at future meetings surrounding a predetermined topic?

Upcoming Programs:

January 18: Walter Carter will be our speaker. This is a good opportunity for members to bring a guest.

the following is from Walter:

My topic is the story of my recently published nonfiction book, “No Greater Sacrifice, No Greater Love” (Smithsonian Institution Press, April 2004).

My book focuses primarily on the life and death of my father, a physician who volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1942, landed with the 29th Infantry Division on Omaha Beach on D-Day 1944, and who was killed by an enemy sniper while trying to rescue a wounded soldier on a battlefield in Normandy, France. The book also includes the story of my mother, who raised us two boys without a husband, and my discovery of my father’s story after my mother’s death in 1995.

Much of the story is drawn from my father’s letters to my mother from the war, and from accounts of veterans who served with him, including the wounded soldier my father was trying to save when he was killed.

You may find additional information about the book on the website of www.amazon.com and on my personal website, www.walterfordcarter.com.

January 25: Sheriff Frank G. Cousins will be our speaker

Up coming events open for discussion include, a Comedy Night and our Golf Tournament. Be thinking, assistance, ideas and suggestions anyone?
