The Tri-Town RotaNews - October 26, 2005

President Elect John Plate took charge of the meeting leading the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Joe Carroll provided the blessing and words of wisdom.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Paul Miller, PDS and Lawrence Club member joined us today. Always great to see Paul at TBM!

Make Ups:

There were no makeups to report this week.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

  • Paul Miller was extra happy today as he received a Fall Foliage Classic shirt from Jan Sinclair. A five-dollar bill left his wallet and was offered up to the Club. Seems we just make Paul's day so special when he joins us.

  • Linda Parker is happy for her visitors from the Emerald Isle. Linda has graciously opened her home the Irish Contingent who are visiting the States as part of the Friend Forever program. Next week we'll be honored by their presence. Perhaps we could have desert in the bar as rumor has it the group has some excellent pianist.

  • Gary Sinclair was happy that his boat is out of the water.

  • Jan Sinclair is happy that Gary gets to winterize the ship.

  • Joe Carroll was happy to be here.

  • Gretchen Marks had a sad dollar, as she couldn't get a flight out to Fort Lauderdale to empty her fridge. She also had a happy dollar that she was here.

  • Dave Twitchell had some nice thoughts and comments on Jack Leitner's memorial service. Jack we're going to miss you.

Raffle:

No winners in the house today.

Announcements:

  • President Peter arrived at 12:30, something about pulling teeth.

  • Harry Martin had lots to say today as TBM was just presented with the Number 1 in District 7930 per Capita giving to the Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation for 2004-2005. You all should be proud of this accomplishment as every penny of every dollar we contribute goes directly to help those in need around the world.

  • To make the day an even bigger event, Harry with a little help from friends, presented 5 new Paul Harris Fellows. Congratulations Janet Larson, PHF, Linda Parker, PHF+1, Jan Sinclair, PHF+1, Gretchen Marks, PHF+1, and Ron Kozlowski, PHF+2. Did you know that TBM is one of three 100% PHF Clubs in the State? Be proud of that fact people, great job!!

  • A special thank you too for all the sponsors of the road race. Jan Sinclair has thank you notes and we ask that each Rotarian send a note to the sponsors that he/she recruited and let Jan know that you did so.

Program:

photo by Joe Long Today's speaker was Steve Schaffer, President and CEO of Children's Friend Mentoring Program. Elizabeth Holmes-Coutracos, Director of the Mentoring Program, joined Steve.

Children's friend has been in existence since 1937 and is the oldest independent children's charity in Massachusetts. Their mission is "to provide for the support and education of indigent children who are suffering from dangerous conditions."

The group serves approximately 4500 children and family members each year.

The mentoring program itself aligns a child with a mentor. The mentor volunteers this/her time to give friendship and provide guidance for the child. The two get together for 6 to 8 hours a month and plan their own meetings and activities. Children's Friend supports the effort through case managers and monthly chats.

Studies have shown that mentoring leads to decreased drug and alcohol abuse by the kids. The kids are 52% less likely to skip school. They become more trusting of their parents and their self-confidence and social skills improve.

For more information on becoming a Mentor please contact Elizabeth Holmes-Coutracos at 978-744-7905 ext. 229

All the best.

"100 years from now, it will not matter ~
What kind of car I drove,
What kind of house I lived in,
How much money I had,
But the world may be different because
I was important in the life of a child".
