The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 31, 2005

Barbara was once again surprised by the early presence of President Peter, but the occasion warranted the effort on Peter's part.

Joe Carroll provided the blessing asking us to remember the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

  •
We are invited to join the Lynnfield Club at their annual BBQ on September 13 at 5:00 PM on the Lynnfield Center common. E-mail President Peter with your decision to attend or not. This event will be in place of our weekly meeting.. photo by Joanne Travers

  • TBM is sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive just in case you have not seen Harry's latest e-mail series. September 6, 8 and 10th are the dates. Give yourself or get a donor to go and you get 100 Foundation Recognition Points towards your next PHF.

photo by Joanne Travers An important pre-speaker from the Red Cross, Easterm Massachusetts Director Michael Allen, came to thank us and fill us in on the need to donate this coming September 6th 8th and 10th. Blood donors can donate every 6 weeks. Type "O" and "B" are particularly needed. Plasma donators are also in high demand by the Red Cross and can donate every 18 days. Just as in Rotary, part of the donation dilemma is ASKING whether for support financially or by donating blood.

Consider yourself ASKED by the Red Cross and by Peter McAllister,Jan Weyland and the rest of the board. Bring yourself and family and friends over 17 to the center at 99 Rosewood Drive in Danvers 978-646-9434. Make an appointment by calling 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-4483-5433). Click here for a map.

Joe Carrol asked about age. Blood is never too old if your still in good health and its working in your veins. Joe's making an appointment!

President Peter says "I look forward to a great turnout. Thank You."

  • Attention Golfers, Dave Twitchell has a certificate for a round of golf at the Blackstone National Golf Course in Sutton MA. Bids will be accepted by the one golfer in attendance, Peter McAllister.

Dave advises that the Distance & Time from Danvers, MA is 66 miles & approximately 1¼ hr. travel time.

Program:

District Governor David Fionda fresh from vacation in Italy was our guest and speaker today. Dave just returned from a four generation family gathering in Italia. His daughter and mother accompanied him to visit cousins and grandmother in the old country.

Julia Phelps our Assistant District Governor was also attending and provided "the short version" of Dave's introduction. photo by Joanne Travers

Dave spoke today about your Rotary Moment. What was that one event or moment when you decided Rotary was the place you needed and wanted to be. For Dave it was hauling 120 turkeys for needy families many Thanksgivings ago. How were all these turkeys going to arrive at their destinations? Rotary provides the effort, the manpower, the financial support and the leadership to get tasks done. The look on the mother's face knowing her family would be taken care of for Thanksgiving is David's moment. What is yours? Rotary brings with it the ideal of giving back to the community and the world.

For the next two weeks Dave will ask all clubs in the District to donate there fines and happy dollars to help with relief in New Orleans and Gulfport. The District will collect the funds and distribute them directly to the Rotary Clubs of those cities. Who better to see the needs of the community than the local Rotarians. There is no waste as 100% of the funds will reach their intended targets.

Governor Dave ended his talk to the TBM Club by calling both Bill Shannon and Harry Martin front and center. He then presented them each with a Paul Harris Recognition Pin with 3 rubies (PHF+8)
