The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 10, 2005

President Peter rang the bell and John Plate provided the blessing asking that we be mindful of those less fortunate and keep the four way test in our thoughts.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Visiting Rotarians today included Julia Phelps, our AG and Danvers Club member, Elias Mackey and Stan Brown from the Danvers Club, Rick Atwood from Haverhill and Paul Miller from the Lawrence Club. Welcome all, thank you for joining us today.

Make Ups:

There were no Make Up cards today.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

Happy dollars were collected by none other than Sergeant at Arms, Dave Bunker.

  • Julia Phelps was happy that her husband is returning from a week long trip. Hot meals once again at the Phelps residence.

  • Peter McAllister is gigglely happy over an empty house as his bride and daughter venture off to PEI and his son is away a summer camp. The good Doctor will have appointments starting at 10 AM during his family's absence followed by golf at 3:30 PM.

  • John Plate dropped in some cash.

  • Paul Miller was happy for his friendships at TBM. Paul you're always welcome at our table!

  • Jan Sinclair was happy as could be as hubby Gary surprised her with a new lap top for her birthday. Timing couldn't be better as Jan's current lap top fizzled out.

  • Gary Sinclair is happy for Jan's new car, which he has been driving all week.

  • Eden Hutt made a 5 dollar deposit because he is celebrating a nine and a half hour night of sleep. Eden's much better half was excited too, thinking that her knight in shining armor had bought a new car. Jen's eyes rolled as she found out Eden was swapping vehicles with his bagel partner, Dave Bunker.

  • Gretchen Marks is five dollars happy about next weeks boat cruise. So far 43 Rotarians and guests have signed up for the evening.

  • Harry Martin gave 2 bucks because he was pleased that at least one member, Linda Parker, read the bulletin and knew of the membership recruiting promotion. August is Membership and extension month. New members mean more hands to help with our efforts.

  • Joe Long paid $5 in advance of a family vacation to Maine.

  • Oscar Padjen offered up some cash too.

  • Bill Shannon was happy for Joanne Travers' excellent job at the treasurer's post during his absence. Bill also dropped in a five dollar bill for his return from the Outer banks of North Carolina where he was presented with a certificate by the First Light Club for the "most determined Rotarian".

  • Todd Darling dropped in $2 for being late and $2 as a plug for Doctor Eden Hutt, Chiropractor, who fixed Todd's ailing leg. Todd, give it 10 more years and Eden will be fixing your back, your neck, your shoulder, your left hip...you'll see what I mean.

Raffle:

Todd and Joanne could not find the 4 of hearts and the pot grows.

Announcements:

  • Road Race October 16th.

  • A reminder from the Secretary, please remember to choose your meal when you arrive. Otherwise, Barbara will pick it for you!

  • Peter McAllister announced that Gail Hull's daughter is back in town and we'll be visited in two weeks with an update of Haiti.

  • Wilson Lee is in search of a host counselor for an Ambassadorial Scholar who is currently in the dorm at MIT.

  • Next week please remember that we'll be meeting at Camp Rotary in Boxford. please try and be there before noontime as lunch will be served with the campers. Yes Barbara was upset to hear that we'll be gone next week. Mostly because she has the day off and Mary will be at Angelica's.

  • Linda Parker attended last weeks Peabody Rotary meeting at which the Friends Forever group for Palestine and Israel were present. Linda will be hosting the Irish contingent this fall. They'll all be visiting the TBM Club on November 2.

  • The plea is out; the Road Race Committee is in search of a Sponsor Chair and a Promotions Chair. Road Race Committee chairs will meet before next weeks meeting, at 11:15, at Camp Rotary.

  • Harry Martin reiterated that extra points may show up again, but next time they may be retrospective. (If you don't know what it means, look it up.)

  • TBM's new slogan is "Give early and give often".

Program:

In lieu of a speaker today we did a little brain storming to get ideas for good deeds for the local community that we could do as a Club, over the coming year. Coat drives, supporting the Camp Rotary, continuing the Dictionary Project.

Julia Phelps also told us about the Districts desire to follow RI's goals for this year and complete a literacy project and a water project. Through the Lawrence Club a training session for "English as a Second Language" will be done in September. Heidi Sawyer from Swampscott and Bruce Whear from Salem are heading up a "pure Water" project in Honduras.

Whatever we decide to do we need to plan as a club and work as a club to make our year a success.

Ask a friend to come to lunch next week. See TBM in action on the road. Let's all pull together and support President Peter and help the Club grow this year.

The 26th running of The Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton Rotary Club's Fall Foliage Classic Road Race will be held October 16, 2005. Sponsors and volunteers are needed to make the event a success. Contact Peter, Joe, Jan or Linda today and Lend a Hand.
