The Tri-Town RotaNews - June 1, 2005

President Elect Peter took over the helm today and rang the bell and Joe Carroll provided the blessing.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Paul Miller was in the house today visiting us from Lawrence. Paul says everything he knows about Rotary, he learned from Harry Martin.

Make Ups:

Gretchen Marks made up at on May 18

Jan Sinclair made up at on May 19

Oscar Padjen made up at on May 24

Bob Luscinski made up at on May 31

Fines and Happy Dollars:

John Plate started with Gretchen Marks today.

  • Gretchen was happy for the Tourney rain date as she has landed another group of golfers and another hole sponsor. Way to go Gretchen, thank you!! Gretchen was also happy for her recent trip to P-town.

  • Joe Long just returned from bug free Northern Maine from a weekend of fly fishing and also had a sad dollar for the passing of friend and neighbor, Laurie LaFrance's mother.

  • Denver Wallace was proud of his grand daughter whose band will be playing at a Red Sox game in the near future.

  • Joe Carroll was also proud of his grandsons' efforts on the baseball diamond.

  • Todd Darling just marked his son Jack's forth birthday and says he feels old. Todd also said not to forget that June 20th is the new date for the Golf Tournament, same time, same place.

  • Peter McAllister was happy for his niece who plays softball for the University of Georgia. The team is currently involved in playoffs and the game was featured on ESPN. Peter was also allegedly fined for the unauthorized ringing of the bell.

  • Harry Martin was happy for John's missing whistle. He also opened up the invite for next years, Topsfield Highland Games. The annual event is held Memorial Day weekend and is run by Harry's son and brewer, Rob Martin and our own Todd Darling, among others.

  • Paul Miller found a buck to celebrate Harry's brevity.

  • Paul Brigham was visiting us today. He attended the Wolfeboro Rotary Club meeting this morning and is in the process of making the transfer from TBM to the NH club. Great to see you Paul!!

Raffle:

The 8 of Clubs eluded both Oscar Padjen and Paul Brigham today.

Citizen of the Year

Paul Porteous sent a nice letter to the Club thanking us for all we do and for his recent recognition as "Citizen of the Year".

Announcements

  • Peter McAllister's installation dinner will be on June 30 at the Danversport Yacht Club. See the President Elect for details. Let's see if we can fill a table at this event.

  • Peter told the following story, pointing out some RI history that is tied to him:

"While leafing through and even reading the Rotarian Magazine “100 Years”, I ran across the name of Sir Harry Lauder.

This theatrical performer just happens to be my father’s godfather.

My grandfather, Doodles the Clown, was a circus performer on the high wire and rode the elephants at every performance of the Tower Circus in Blackpool, England. My father is named William Lauder McAllister and my son Kevin Lauder McAllister carries on the name.

Sir Harry coined the phrase “The show must go on.” when he was informed just before going on to entertain British Troops, his son had been killed by the bombing in London.

It gives me pride to be carrying on the tradition of Rotary in the McAllister family."

  • Golf is rescheduled for the 20th of June. Sponsor signs are still available and checks for the hole sponsors are to be made out to the TBM Rotary Foundation. Know any golfers who'd like to get out for a great day and a great cause? We still need foursomes too.

  • Host sponsor are being sought for the visiting "Friends Forever" group. See Linda for details.

  • Joanne Travers is returning this weekend from the Dominican Republic. Stay tuned for an update.

  • The Golf Tournament, our biggest fund raiser of the year is just around the corner, less than three weeks away.
    The new date is:
    Monday, June 20, 2005
    .

Volunteers are needed in all departments, sponsor sign ups, marketing, p.r., recruiting golfers, donation collections and more.

Please volunteer your services and let Todd know that you can help.

Sign sponsorships can still be sold. Names of new sponsors especially need to be submitted so that we can get signs made up.

In lieu of our regular meeting all members are invited to join the golf crowd for lunch. Many attended last year's event and the golfers got a chance to see who is behind the scenes of this important fund raiser.

Program:

The No Child Left Behind Act includes Art in its definition of Core Subjects. Our speaker today, Terry Meinelt, the Art Department director at Masconomet feels the 8 art teachers are “a Team” in the academic structure at Masco. He looks for art teachers with real world experiences and interesting resumes.

Liz Saitta was a past Masco student who worked as a designer in New York. She returned to the area because she missed the lifestyle here and wanted to teach . She has been with the department as an Art Design teacher.

Joe Yutkins was a professional photographer for many years. He has brought his expertise and his own equipment to Masco’s Photography classes. Classes include Art Studio I, II, III and AP emphasizing Thematic Structure with an emphasis on critiquing.

Drawing, Painting, Photography, Graphic Arts and Digital Imaging round out the department. One bonus for local businesses Terry mentioned was the Pro Bono design work the students can provide. Letterhead, promotional materials or brochures are used as a class project, a win, win situation.

The remainder of the program entailed Terry showing off two of his student’s works. You missed some beautiful art.
