It still needs to be finished, but the walls are up, the rooms are partitioned and the roof is on. This allowed us to begin seeing patients.

The Tri-Town RotaNews - March 16, 2005

President Linda brought the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Joe Carroll quoted Saint Francis' response to the question, "What would you do if you had one day to live/" "I finish hoeing the garden" was his response. Like our own lives in Rotary, finishing what we started is always the most rewarding.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

We had a good crowd today. Barbara had to set an extra table!

Tom Tanous visited us from the Hamilton/Wenham Club.

Debbie Sillivan and Nathan Ferrell were guests of Bill Shannon.

Jan Sinclair brought Amanda Hume.

Susan Nelson was the guest of Joanne Travers.

New member Janet Larson brought her husband Randy Larson.

Gordon Vlen was the guest of Jim Fitzgerald.

Perhaps there are some in this fine group who will be new members of the TBM Club!

Make Ups:

Fines and Happy Dollars:

President Elect Peter served as the Sergeant at Arms again today.

  • Janet Larson dropped a buck in thanks for having her as part of the Club. Thank you Janet!!
  • Bob Murphy dropped 2 bucks into the pot as he's happy about our news members.
  • Denver Wallace, after knowing Janet and her husband John in different capacities, just figured out how they were connected.
  • Adam Scott donated to Spencer.
  • Joe Carroll was happy for is grand children son and daughter-in-law being on vacation.
  • Bernie Creeden celebrated the Holy Cross victory over rival Notre Dame.
  • Jim Fitzgerald was happy that Peter McAllister was so enlightened at PETS.
  • Joanne Travers was proud of her son Matthew learning how to properly shake hands and face a crowd through his cub scouts experiences.
  • President Elect Peter threw up a fiver for his PETS weekend.

Raffle:

Gary Sinclair drew first and had no idea what card he was looking for. Bermuda on the brain. Adam Scott, lucky in his first day as a Rotarian missed the hidden eight of spades by 2. Maybe next time.

PHF Recognition:

Paul Brigham was present today. His move to NH is still in the works. Great having you with us today Paul. Harry Martin asked that Paul join him at the front of the room. With great pride and admiration, Harry presented Paul with his First Multiple Paul Harris Fellow Pin in recognition of Paul's contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Congratulations Paul Brigham and thank you for all you've done and will do for Rotary and the world in which we live.

Harry reminded the crowd that every year a sustaining member makes a $100 contribution to The Rotary Foundation. These funds are used to promote good around the world and in our own back yards. Our own back yards by the way have changed. If you attended the meeting when Joe Carroll presented a video of a talk made by Larry Hunter you saw him discuss our shrinking economic world.

Announcements

  • Joanne Travers reminds us that in conjunction with the recently awarded Rotary Foundation Major Matching Grant, we want to take advantage of access to a 40 foot shipping container. Click here for the list of items that are needed. Time is of the essence, since the container is scheduled to ship on April 9. This means we have to act NOW! Don't be shy about contributing a lot. A 40 foot container is quite large!

  • Joanne Travers also pointed out that the Comedy Night on April 14 is fast approaching! A great comedy show, a DJ, great food from Angelica's, and a cash bar, are all of lined up. The only thing we still need are attendees! Tickets have been passed out to members attending this weeks and last weeks meetings. If you don't have your tickets yet or if you need more tickets, contact Joanne. Let's have a great tournout!

  • Todd Darling reminds us of the upcoming golf tournament. May 26 at the Ferncroft. We need help soliciting sponsors and getting players. Please volunteer to help in any way you can. The sum of all the parts is greater than the hole. (Yes I meant it that way)

  • RYLA interviews will be conducted next week on the 23rd at the Northshore Regional Technical High School

Program:

Joe Carroll introduced today's speaker, John Finley. John is the Head of School of the Epiphany School in Dorchester. The school is geared towards kids in the inner city who are economically disadvantaged. The kids they take in test in the low of the low range for fifth grade education. By the time they finish up the eighth grade they are learning at grade 10 levels and above.

"Epiphany's small classes, individualized curricula, and extended school days provide rigorous academic, moral and social instruction. In close partnership with families, we are an innovative learning community that affords structured support to help students thrive. Together we are a school that never gives up on a child."

Kids attend the school from 7:20 am to 7:30 pm Monday through Thursday, 7:20 am to 3:30 pm (or later) on Friday and 8:30 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays. They truly make a difference in these kids' lives. For more information go to www.epiphanyschool.com.
