Announcements

  • We need help with RYLA interviews that are coming up in two weeks. The Clean up of camp Rotary is scheduled for May 15th. Friends, family and neighbors are welcome to come help get the place in shape for summer.

  • The Golf tournament, our biggest fund raiser of the year is just around the corner. Volunteers are needed in all departments, sponsor sign ups, marketing, p.r., recruiting golfers, donation collections and more.

  • Joanne Travers announced the comedy night scheduled for April 15, 2005. Comedian Paul Gilligan once again will be there with friends. Thank you to Chris for the function room donation.

  • Partners for a Greater Voice is selling cookbooks again this year.

  • The Club's matching grant was approved for support of our international project bringing hearing aides and ear molds, vocational training materials, audio logical testing, and help in establishing an acoustical classroom. Volunteers are being sought to help carry out the mission. We have a 40 foot container making the trip and there is room for school supplies and other goods.

  • Gail Hull announced that the medical building is up and the walls and floors are being completed as we meet. The first real medical trip has been completed. A dental hygienist cleaned teeth of many of the local people and spoke about hygiene. Most noticeable was the fact that the general dental health has improved greatly.

Program:

William Ketter
Photo by Joanne Travers Today's speaker was the Lawrence Eagle's Editor in Chief Bill Ketter. He spoke about the insurance fraud investigation that the paper conducted last year.

Journalist have a responsibility of informing the people as a guide dog and preserving honesty as a watch dog.

The insurance fraud is not just limited to Lawrence, it's an urban problem. Massachusetts pay the 4th highest insurance rates in the country and a major reason is fraud. The cost of fraud is over $25 million dollars annually in Massachusetts.

The Eagle Tribunes investigation ended up in 120 indictments. Accident claims dropped by over 60%. Involvement in setting up fraud cases now can be treated as a felony.

Efforts like the one put forth by the paper may just help reduce our insurance expenses in the future.
