The Tri-Town RotaNews - February 16, 2005
President Linda dinged the bell an 12:15. Joe Carroll asked us to think the of opportunities for peace around the world.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests:
Visitors today included Janet Larson, manager at Sovereign Bank in Middleton and Mark McCrill from the Lawrence Club. Welcome to you both.
Make Ups:
There were no makeup cards today.
Fines and Happy Dollars:
John Plate makes his rounds with whistle in hand.
John Plate did not wait to be called to the floor. He suddenly sprang from his feet, donned his whistle and grabbed Spencer. Table three was quiet despite Peter's presence...or was it the conversations going on at table 1 and 2. Linda, man that bell next week or get John a new, bigger and louder whistle, and the rest of us, listen up. You maybe missing a good story or a good laugh that you can spread.
- Seems Gary requires some sort of attention. He's happy for an up coming 4 day trip to the Forks in Maine to go snowmobiling, it's a great area for fly fishing in the late spring early summer too Todd.
- Joanne Travers is excited about a family trip of her own. The clan is headed to the Dominican Republic, Vacation Joanne, vacation.
- Linda paid a fine. She thought she was at home because she was talking to herself.
- Ira was glad to see Dave Twitchell and happy to announce both he and Janet missed her induction into the Club.
- Harry asked John to get an upgrade on the whistle. Seems no matter how hard John blew into the thing it just chirped. Does anyone have a connection with any of our local officers?
- Jim Fitzgerald was happy because he managed to secure Jack Leitner's condo for a holiday in Florida.
- Bob Murphy had dollars and no comment.
- Todd Darling announced that he and his lovely bride Marla are bringing another Darling into the world. Welcome Todd to the Trio Club.
- Joe Long gave a couple and wondered if John's whistle came from a box of Cracker Jack's. They just don't make prizes like they used to.
- Eden Hutt welcomed Todd to the house of pain...neither of you have a clue of what is yet to come, ha.
- David Bunker is off to Switzerland with his and his brother's the family for a ski week. Eden thinks it's really a trip for the Swiss chocolate for Dave's sweet tooth.
- John fined Peter "motor mouth" McAllister for gabbing throughout the collection. He added an FYI that the makers of Listerine are being sued by a floss manufacture for their plaque elimination claims. Peter's job is safe.
Raffle:
The drawing exposed only Aces today, no winner. Sorry Dave and Harry.

Program:
Today's speaker was the VCR. Joe Carroll brought an eye opening tape of Lester Thoreau speaking about things to come for the USA's and the global economy. Directly affected is the USA's education system. The talk took place in 1997 and it's almost scary how his thoughts have become reality. This isn't Kansas any more people. It's the whole world at your doorstep.
Five Fundamental changes occurred in the world that have created the "period of punctuated equilibrium" between economics and education here in the U.S.
- The end of communism, one third of the worlds population was suddenly dumped into the capitalist system, overload.
- Man made "Brain power" industries push past the old rule of the manufacturing world.
- Demography, by 2525 the elder will have control over the destiny of the USA's education system.
- For the first time in history we have a truly global economy.
- No one will be a dominant economic power in the 21st century. Production will simply take place in the cheapest area of the world. The American economic game is over.
I think we should make this tape available to some of you local politician's.
Advancement of the economy here in the USA will not happen without better education. "You can't just look at the "good old American way as think that it's going to work in the 21st century". I want to see the tape again.
