The Tri-Town RotaNews - January 5, 2005

President Linda began the meeting right on time so I am told, rang the bell and lead us all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Joe Carroll provided the thoughts for the day.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Visitors today included, Mark Lique, Roberta Byington (a potential member?), Jim Norris from the Danvers Club and Masco Superintendent Claire Sheff Kohn.

Make Ups:

Bob Luscinski attended a makeup meeting at

Fines and Happy Dollars:

John Plate, a.k.a Willie Whistle, (I am dating myself here) took to the floor to with a smile on his face and Spencer in hand.

  • Joanne Travers announced that Partners for a Greater Voice just received it's first grant, an exciting time.

  • Harry had some ripped cash to deliver to the cause.

  • I delivered $10 to the pot to tell of my first experience with a treadmill that nearly killed me...twice. Eden could only laugh.

  • Denver was happy about his upcoming second retirement. He also told of a resident of 4 mile Village that recently turned 90 and proclaimed he had outlived the joggers and now he felt like the last leaf on the tree and the wind was blowing.

  • Oscar contributed quietly.

  • Gary was all to happy to have the Masco Super here today mentioning that she controls his destiny.

  • Jan was happy that she had two identical shoes on today. Recently Jan got up early one morning and got herself dressed in the dark. A fashion faux pas was created as she dressed in black and blue...but her shoes matched, one black one blue.

  • Bill Shannon told a treadmill story too. Seems his folks, ages 91 and 89 used these machines everyday. One-day mother decided to help Dad along and speed up his machine. As she leaned over to adjust his controls, mother forgot that her machine was still running and was thrown off the back and into the wall. I think the moral of the treadmill stories is to say the hell with them and become a couch potato; it's simply less dangerous.

  • Al Craig agrees and was happy that he doesn't turn on his machine.

  • Paul Brigham thanked the Club and told of his move to Tuftonborough NH. Thank you Paul for your years of service, your photo's at the road race and your friendship to the Club and the tri-Town.

  • Linda gave a sad dollar for Paul's departure to the North.

Paul we're going to have to get you the Clubs in your new hometown area.

Raffle:

The King of Hearts was discovered today by Lois Brown.

Announcements

  • Treasurer Bill announced that he forgot the Bill's...dues are coming out for the next half.

  • There is a special recognition dinner hosted by the Boston Club, on Thursday February 24th at Anthony's Pier 4. Fellowship begins at 6:00 and dinner is at 7:00. Frank C. Collins, Jr, RI UN Representative and past RI vice President, will be the keynote speaker. The cost is $65 per person.

  • Kevin McKelvey, District 7930 Interact Chair will be holding an informational meeting January 21 at the Burlington H.S. from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Claire Sheff Kohn, Masconomet Superintendent was our speaker today. Claire took over the helm this past August and filled us in on her experiences to date. Claire has taken the time to jump into the three communities served by Masco. Getting to know the people and students is of utmost importance to all involved.

She was very excited about the overwhelming positive comments about the school system as a whole. Employees, parents and students alike all had mostly good things to say. Unusual because typically employees sometimes dread going to work, parents stop their involvement in the education process of their children typically in elementary school and students get excited over summer vacation.

Claire was a joy to listen to as her own enthusiasm and commitment for the school shows through and the kids of Topsfield Boxford and Middleton can only benefit from her leadership.

Visit http://www.masconomet.org/ and learn more or contact Claire.
