Matching Grant Application Moves Forward Apr 28, 2004
Topsfield, Boxford, Middleton Rotary Club announces it's plans to submit a matching grant to The Rotary Foundation
President Linda brought the meeting to order with the weekly sounding of the bell and Joe Carroll gave the blessing.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests:
Visitors today included Dave and Gail Bean from the Danvers Club, Ernie Wronka from Lynnfield, our speaker, and frequent visitor, Dr. Dave Swenson from Danvers and Janet Larson, branch manager from Sovereign Bank in Middleton. Welcome all and thank you for joining us today.
Make Ups:
No Makeup cards were received today.
Fines and Happy Dollars:
Seargent At Arms John looms large in the eyes of the club!
Fines were fine.
Todd Darling paid for his up and coming trip to Montana.
Harry Martin had two buck for the Foundation and reminded all that November is Foundation month. It would be great if we can all rally and have our foundation donations in before the months end in support of the month.
Bob Luscinski was happy to be with us today as was Bob Murphy.
Bob Was is rumored to be involved in a "write in" Presidential Campaign.
Joe Carroll is happy for the Red Sox, but they have to win quickly. This late night stuff is exhausting.
Gretchen Marks watched the game in sneak peeks between reading and sleeping. Keeps the heart rate down too. $60 found it's way into the pot. Earmarked for the road race fund, the monies were a tribute by Gretchen for celebrating her 29th birthday for the 32nd time. Happy Birthday Gretchen rang out through the walls at Angelica's. Sounded pretty darn good too thanks to Peter the Great.
Jim Fitzgerald was happy to see Al Craig with us today. A great fair this year and a hearty thank you for all he does for the Club, his dealings with the Town of Topsfield and the community.
Peter McAllister had a great NY Yankee joke.
Ira Singer was happy for Bob Was's participation in a recent meeting for community preservation for the town OF Middleton. Neighbors a helping neighbor, that's what it's all about.
Al Craig was happy for the weather and proposed that we come back again next year as it is said there is a correlation between the TBM Rotary's presence at the Fair this year and all the fine weather that we enjoyed.
Raffle:
John Plate and Harry Martin both showed their lucky numbers but to no avail as they failed to find the King of Hearts.
Announcements:
President Linda announced that the Foundation Seminar is next Tuesday. Linda will be attending and anyone else interested please call her at 978 750 1900 ext 3328.
The raffle netted us $2,389.25. Way to go TBM.
Bob Murphy urged on foursomes for the Middleton Benefit Golf Tourney next Thursday at the Ferncroft. $85 a player includes lunch. It's a real bargain and all the proceeds benefit the town. All proceeds, every dollar brought in. Thank you Fercroft!!
On November third there is a comedy night here at Angelica's. What a great opportunity for some fellowship. Perhaps we could all meet a little early at the Piano bar. The evenings promises to be fun and what a great way to start the weekend a little early. Bob Murphy is once again involved and will have tickets available.
Ira Singer thanked all for their efforts for the road race. A great day with the weather as we had plenty of sunshine. Food was plentiful as well. This being the last year of Ira's chair of the race Harry reminds all that the race is not just a fundraiser, it's also an important community event that TBM Rotary has put on for 25 years.
Gretchen called for a special thank you for all that have made the event so special for all these years. Ira, Jim Fitzgerald, Paul Brigham and everyone else that has put in their time.
Program:
Today's speaker, Dr. Dave Swenson told us about his interesting experiences as a forensics expert for the courts. The room was on the edges of their seats as Dave spoke about murder and human nature. He made an interesting point about "how we see ourselves is quite often the opposite, like looking into a mirror." On murder case involved a stabbing where the victim was stabbed 47 times, that would be know as "overkill".
Even though Dave has been involved in thousands of cases, he has never found a person guilty or innocent. That's the job of the courts.
One bit of advice Dave had for the Club was that if you feel danger, pay attention. Your will to live is part of the essence of your being. Listen to it. If you're in the area of a killing get out, as people who have killed are likely to do it again.
