Raffle:

Paul Brigham and Joe Carroll were lucky enough to have their tickets drawn but they couldn't find the King of Hearts.

Announcements:

  • Bob Murphy reminds everyone of the bargain priced golf tournament coming up October 28th at the Ferncroft. All proceeds raised by the event will benefit a project in the town of Middleton. To date the Rotary Club has but one foursome entered. The Board of Trade and Kiwanis are working diligently to fill the day. Contact everyone you know who may want a chance to play the course at a reduced rate and know that every penny of his or her fee goes to support a worthy cause.

  • Jack Leitner is in the hospital and our thoughts and prayers go out to him.

  • Jan Sinclair is working on the beginnings of a Christmas party for the Club. Thoughts, ideas or if you'd like to help, please give her a call.

  • Jan Sinclair, Gary Sinclair and Linda Parker will be venturing to Haiti soon. They need to bring with them toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, crayons and coloring books, and any other small toiletries items that can be used.

  • The Topsfield Fair raffle sell off will be Oct 1-3. Ira Singer brought in tickets and distributed them to the group. Sell, sell, sell. This is a major bonus thank you to Frank Martino for supplying the Maserati. Thank you to Al Craig for the location. Thank you to Dave Twitchell for working with Al to secure the tent. Thank you to Jack Leitner for getting the tickets printed. Thank you to Joanne Travers for making the posters. Thank you to those who gave up their time to man the booth and sell tickets.

  • While we're at it, thank you to Ira Singer for all your efforts leading up to the Fall Foliage Classic Road Race and thank you to all that donate their time and energies to make the event a success!

Program:

Today's speaker, Diane Giarusso from the Boxford Public Library spoke on the importance of libraries in our lives. Libraries inform citizens, break down boundaries between the young and old, the literate and illiterate, the rich the poor. Libraries encourage people to think independently as all points of view are offered through their doors. Libraries nourish creativity, let the mind grow and offer a quiet place to think and read. Libraries open children's minds help them grow into responsible and informed adults. Libraries bring neighbors together; they offer collections, programs and meeting space. Libraries have something for everyone. They let us communicate with the past allowing us to work towards the future.

Speaking of libraries, Joe Carroll brought up a very interesting fact; President Harry Truman never attended college but was educated through reading every book in his high school library.
