The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 18, 2004

President Linda took great pains to start today's meeting on time... she actually took a poll of members present to find out exactly what time they had on their watches. Averaging the different times led to a meeting that began precisely on time!

Thanks to Denver Wallace for giving the invocation.

President Linda read an article from the Rotarian magazine about retention -no, Peter, it has nothing to do with bodily functions - rather, it refers to methods of assuring that current Rotarians remain passionate about Rotary and satisfied that they are good Rotarians.

Gale Hull gave us an update on the medical clinic construction in Haiti. She also announced that Linda, Gary and Jan will travel with her to Haiti in the fall to help with the clinic and to attend a meeting of the Petionville Rotary Club.

President Linda presented the Tri-Town Council on Youth and Family Services a $1,000 check, which is part of '03 Road Race proceeds. Photo by Joanne Travers

Raffle:

There were no winners in today's drawing as Bob Was and Harry Martin couldn't find the 7 of clubs.

Announcements:

  • Announcements included information about a piano concert slash fundraiser for the Beverly Club on November 7th. Linda has the details.

  • On September 11 the Breakwater Daybreak Club is having its grand opening Charter Night Dinner at the Portland Marriott. $30 per person for dinner and Past RI President, Rick King is the featured speaker.

  • By the way, in many of the newsletters that have been coming to you via e-mail there is a crossword puzzle that provides both entertainment and Rotary Education at the same time. They are designed for the vertically and horizontally challenged, and have a "cheat" option which will give you the answers. I like to think of it as a "teacher" option with Harry being the instructor. Please check the puzzles out and click on the submit button. John Plate has promised that there is a hidden Hindu word in the puzzle too! Give the answer to John and win a prize!

  • Click on the latest Haiti Project Report headline for some photos of the clinic under construction. The photos are courtesy of Peter Marecka, an intern with PID.

  • Click on the latest Greater Voice Project Report headline for the latest Director's Report.

  • Don't forget your Wheelchair Foundation donation of $75. John Plate will gladly accept your money, or you can make a donation by phone by calling (877) 378-3839. For each $75.00 donated, you will receive a beautiful presentation folder, including a photograph of a wheelchair recipient, and a certificate indicating the person's name, age, country and wheelchair number.

Program:

Our own Joanne Travers gave a PowerPoint presentation on her nonprofit organization, Partners for a Greater Voice. Joanne is doing wonderful work with children from the Dominican Republic who have some degree of hearing loss. She is looking forward to the possibility of receiving a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation to support her work. Joanne told a touching story of working with Honorary Rotarian Gale Hull to help a three year old Haitian girl receive testing and treatment for hearing loss. Great work, both of you!

Upcoming Programs:

October 6: Lunch at the Topsfield Fair!
