The Tri-Town RotaNews - August 11, 2004
President and Most High Counsel Linda rang the bell Joe Long style (a little after the 12:15 start) and John Plate blessed the day.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests:
Today we were visited by Dave "I'm thinking of joining TBM" Swenson, from the Danvers club, and Denver Wallace's grandson Craig. Great to have you both with us!! Please come again and often!
Fines and Happy Dollars:
John "Robin Hood" Plate circled the group of Rotarians in search of "donations". A very quiet crowd today just stuffed dollars into the pot. Todd Darling was bagged for being pin less but not penniless.
Joanne pays close attention, while Jim and Harry pretend that Seargent At Arms John is not there!
Linda Parker was charged for the tardy bell.
Gary "Gilligan" Sinclair has returned from the Isle all-full of smiles and yet we heard very little of the cruise. Perhaps it was all the good conversation going on around the room, maybe the fast approaching end of summer blues, the humidity or the like.
Next meeting try and bring a little story with you and let John enjoy the challenge of collecting your silver.
Seargent At Arms John strongly recommends solving the following puzzle!
Puzzle Facts:
1. Puzzle answers are almost always Rotary related.
2. Many answers can be found in the Rotarian Magazine. Do you read your copy?
3. Two word answers do not have spaces between the words.
4. Clues that contain the notation (Hist), have answers that can be found at http://www.historynewsletter.org/. So far they have all come from the "History Quiz". The next source is "One Page History".
5. After answering all clues (even if the "cheat" button is used), always click the blue text below the puzzle. There may be special information available.
6. Please let your webmaster know if you have difficulty displaying the puzzle. It is a popup, and you may want to allow popups when viewing the TBM website, if you use a popup blocker. There are no malicious popups on the TBM website.
7. Feel free to suggest answers and clues to the webmaster.
Above all else, enjoy!
Raffle:
The new deck of cards kept the seven of clubs hidden on the first go round. Despite having an arms length of tickets and a special guest pulling the first number, Denver Wallace's number failed to come up. Did I mention the special guest was Craig, Denver's Grandson? Come on kid you gotta help out your grandfather!! Hopefully there was a stop at Richardson's on the way home.
Gary Sinclair drew the 4 of hearts and Peter McAllister grabbed the 3 of clubs. Sorry guys better luck next time!
Announcements:
- Announcements included information about a piano concert slash fundraiser for the Beverly Club on November 7th. Linda has the details. Could be a great "date" night for Eden as the piano player is from Eden's favorite place in the world Italia. I can see it now Doctor...
- On September 11 the Breakwater Daybreak Club is having it's grand opening Charter Night Dinner at the Portland Marriott. $30 per person for dinner and Past RI President, Rick King is the featured speaker. He alone is worth the trip. Could be a great weekend getting away as Portland is really a fun city.
- By the way, in many of the newsletters that have been coming to you via e-mail there is a crossword puzzle that provides both entertainment and Rotary Education at the same time. They are designed for the vertically and horizontally challenged, and have a "cheat" option which will give you the answers. I like to think of it as a "teacher" option with Harry being the instructor. Please check the puzzles out and click on the submit button. John Plate has promised that there is a hidden Hindu word in the puzzle too! Give the answer to John and win a prize!

Program:
Today's speaker was President Linda as we held our first Club Assembly for the 2004-2005 RI year. Linda reviewed the surveys that were submitted. A good exercise as we are forced to look at ourselves as a club. What are we doing right, what do we need to work on, were should we focus our efforts, how do we attract and keep new members. Jan Sinclair (what was Mrs. Howells nickname? Gary must know.) suggested that membership needs to be in our face weekly as constant reminders. Denver Wallace suggested that bringing a guest to a Rotary event, like the fair meeting or the road race could be a great way for someone to see the club in action. Gary Sinclair suggested that we look at the classifications again as a means of identifying potential new members. All great ideas!! Please think to invite someone you'd like to see as a club member to a meeting or and event soon.
Get involved too as a committee member too. What's your passion, Club, Community, International or Vocational? We need to get back to basics and make TBM shine in the eyes of the community. A little effort from each and every one of us will ensure that the people in our communities know who we are.
Time expired for the day, but lets continue with discussions of how we can make this club the best it's ever been and put those plans into action.
Upcoming Programs:
August 25: Official visit of District Governor Donna D'Agostino
Calendar:
August 11 is the Districts Membership 101 meeting at Danversport.
September 18 is the Boxford Apple Festival; we're looking for Boxford members to help out with the booth. This is a great way to spread the Rotary word in our community.
February 23: Tentative date for a joint meeting with the Beverly Club.
June 18-22, 2005: Rotary Centennial Celebration in Chicago - where it all begin! Register early!
