President Linda, seen above directing traffic in Angelica's lobby, began the meeting promptly at 12:15 LST (12:13 EST) and John Plate filled in for Joe Carroll, providing the blessing.

Harry Martin, who claims that the time on his watch is traceable to The National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST), says that Linda started exactly on time.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Dave Swenson from Danvers and today's speaker Bernadine Young were our guests today.

Fines and Happy Dollars:

John Plate strolled the room with Spencer collecting happy dollars.

Joanne Travers donated to the Todd Darling Nantucket Lunch Fund. Seems during a Saturday excursion to retrieve his boat with none other than Joe Long, the two never ate lunch. A beer was provided however and both were quite happy.

Linda Parker and Jim Fitzgerald both brought empty wallets and the Bank of Darling provided loans to add to the day's collections.

Seargent At Arms John strongly recommends solving the following puzzle!

Test your Rotary Knowledge

The Club received 13 thank yous from the wheelchair foundation including pictures of the recipients of the chairs we helped fund. Great job here everyone!!

Peter McAllister arrived at 12:15 PMST (12:00 EST)

Has anyone seen the ?

Raffle:

For the record Linda did expose the 2 of hearts as proof that she's not pulling a Bob Murphy. Jim Fitzgerald was the first to have his number drawn but o no avail. Then Bob Murphy had his number come up. Old eagle eyes must have watched Linda very carefully as low and behold the 2 of hearts showed up in his hand. For his skill Bob walked out of the meeting with about $261.00 Canadian.

Photo by Joe Long The club must be slipping if he got to walk out the door with all that loot!

Announcements:

  • Unbelievably the announcements were few this week.

  • Please let Jim or Linda know that you're planning on attending the Boston meeting on the 18th. Linda will be providing the parking and cost for lunch is $22 to $25 (That's U.S. dollars Bob) Call Gretchen regarding car pool organization and plan on leaving around 11:00 to 11:15.

  • Next Wednesday there is a board meeting at 11:00 a.m. at Angelica's.

  • The Club Assembly will follow.

  • The afternoon of the 11th there is a membership 101 meeting at Danversport Yacht Club. Time is 4:00 to 8:00 and included a BBQ.

  • Click on the latest Haiti Project headline for some photos of the clinic under construction. The photos are courtesy of Peter Marecka, an intern with PID.

Program:

Today's speaker was Bernadine Young, the Director of Transition to Work at the North Shore Community Action Program of Peabody. The program is geared towards helping those unfortunate enough to have become homeless, get back on their feet with the help of job training. Their concentration is on housing and workforce development for eight homeless shelters on the North Shore.

Bernadine believes that when communities fail to incorporate the critical needs of the poorest residents, they allow the quality of life to begin to subtly, and not so subtly, erode for everyone as well. She sees evidence in, but for one example, the unfortunate expenses for local companies in cost associated with entry-level recruitment, attrition, dispute resolution and daily absenteeism.

Did you know over 50% of the homeless hold more than one job?

The group assists participants who are serious in their goal to get back on their feet by providing Individual Development Accounts. This program encourages the participants to save money through a match by the program. The funds, after two years, can be used to further education, start a business or help with the purchase of a home.

Feel free to visit Bernadine at her office at 75 Central Street, Peabody.

President Linda thanks Bernadine Young for an interesting program.
