The Tri-Town RotaNews - July 14, 2004

President Linda rang the bell at 12:22. (Past Pres. Joe must have rubbed off on her) and Joe Carroll's blessing asked that as Rotarians that we do what is necessary to help eliminate ignorance in the world.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Carol Plate joined us for lunch today, as did Andy Rheault from the Danvers club. Great to have you both with us!

Fines and Happy Dollars:

John "The Sheriff" Plate carried Spencer around the room in search of fines and Happy Dollars. Harry threw 2 bucks into the pot for you know what. If you don't know why ask Harry next time you see him.

Although broke, President Linda wrote a check for $56 dollars for some reason and Peter led us in "Happy Birthday".

John pointed out that this edition of the Tri-Town Rotanews will be the last chance for members to answer the question posed below!

Jim Fitzgerald paid up as a result of today's speaker forgetting where we were. Jim did announce the driving range at Richardson's has made known that there has been a theft of a set of golf clubs from their facility. The odd thing is these clubs have disappeared one club at a time. All that's left is the bag.

Strange enough, John had a golf bag, some driving range balls and a book on golf to auction off today. Can anyone say "receipt of stolen property?"

John also let us in on a little know fact that his bride Carol was the regional champion for the adult jacks club and that they made it illegal for golf balls to be used during competition because they bounce too high.

By the way the club has $20 extras a result of John's efforts. Every little bit adds up. Thanks John!!

Joe Long deposited $5 for returning from Yellowstone unscathed by the bears. Harry shamed him for another $5.

Raffle:

Today drawing was a bust. Lost cards were replaced and Jan (also known as Gary) and Ira turned up everything but the 2 of hearts. Same went for this weeks winners Jim and Peter. Yes Peter, even though you left we still allowed for your ticket to win. What a great group!!

Old habits are hard to overcome!
President Linda had undertaken the awsome task of re-cycling the deck of cards, and was making wonderful progress.
Gary, on the other hand fell victim to the previous tradition of destroying the cards after they were chosen, thereby nullifying President Linda's hard won gains.
Gary has promised to replace the deck.

Announcements:

  • President Linda read Kimberly Faust's thank you to the club for your Rotary Scholarship, which she was awarded this spring.

  • Dues bills are out and about see Bill Shannon with your check. He'll accept sustaining member checks at the same time too!!

  • Gail Hull is back in Haiti working on the medical center. They've added solar power for the refrigeration unit enabling them to keep medications on hand.

  • Friends forever will have a group in the area visiting Rotary Clubs. July 27th they'll be at Peabody and on August 2nd they'll be at Danvers. Please try and visit if you can.

  • Wednesday August 11 there will be a Membership 101 seminar and cookout at Danversport Yacht Club. Registration is at 3:300 and activities start at 4:00. Please let Joe or Linda know if you'll be able to attend. It will count as a make up by the way.

  • The Marblehead Club is holding their annual Lobster raffle to raise money for their efforts. If the winner is from a Rotary Club they'll donate $500 to that Club's efforts. It's a no brainer.

  • Don't forget your Wheelchair Foundation donation of $75. John Plate will gladly accept your money, or you can make a donation by phone by calling (877) 378-3839. For each $75.00 donated, you will receive a beautiful presentation folder, including a photograph of a wheelchair recipient, and a certificate indicating the person's name, age, country and wheelchair number.

Program:

Since our speaker was not present, John Plate took the opportunity to wrap up his weekly saga on the subject of historical golf clubs.

This is the stuff of legends!

Membership News:

  • Gary Sinclair had a funny story about an Ambassadorial Scholar applicant who was late to her interview. She ended up having to take a cab ride from Boston to Ipswich. The cabby was of Arab decent and she spoke Arabic and was able to convinced man to drive her to Topsfield. Mighty big of him as he brought her via Swampscott.

  • Jim Fitzgerald announced a field trip for the club to visit the Boston Club on August 18th. TBM will pay for parking. Please seriously consider going to on this excursion, as it will promise to be a memorable time and a great fellowship opportunity. See Jim or Linda for more details. More info will be brought up next week.
