The Tri-Town RotaNews - October 16, 2002 |
|
|
Alas, another week has passed. It seems like this bulletin was just published yesterday. Come to think of it, last week's bulletin was just published yesterday! Oh well, we're doing the best we can!
Despite the totally undeserved criticism by Irreverent (see below), the bulletin will begin by informing you that today's meeting was opened by President Bob precisely at 12:15 PM. The invocation was given by Joe Carroll, who, much like his predecessor, our old friend Father Jon, insists on a hearty "Amen". If we get it wrong, he makes us say it over again!
There were no visiting Rotarians today. Our two guests were Lisa Foley, our speaker, and Bill Quirk, a guest of Harry Martin.

Announcements:
Remember the Global Quest: Sponsor at least one new member this year and wear your Rotary pin every day! Have you invited a potential new quality member to a meeting yet?
The club service committee is considering organizing a social event on November 14, which would double as a celebration for the club attaining 100% Paul Harris Fellow status. If you haven't done so already, please contact President Bob immediately with an RSVP, declaring yea or ney. Late breaking news: To date, only 15 club members have signed-up for this event. The cost $15 and the event will count as a meeting. Surely, the rest of you would like an inexpensive night out with friends to celebrate our status as one of less than 100 clubs in the world to achieve 100% Paul Harris Fellows!!!

The Fall Foliage Classic Road Race
The road race takes place this coming Sunday, October 20. Please plan to be there between 11 AM and 12 noon.
Our solicitation gurus, Jack Leitner and Dave Twitchell, and race chair Ira Singer, report that a total of approximately $10,000 has been donated to date. Proceeds from runners' applications are yet to be realized. Congratulations to the team captains and the rest of you hard working Rotarians!
| |
With only two weeks until the road race, the teams must now begin to hit their solicitation stride as our goal of $10,000 looms ever closer.

Like a pesky mosquito buzzing in the middle of the night, our mystery critic, Irreverent, just won't go away. Here is his or her latest litany of lame letters:

Thoughtful Comments and Sound Advice . . .
What a circus. First, our esteemed Ringmaster, Bob M. started our meeting "on time." Why does our bulletin editor, Gary S. finds it necessary to start almost every newsletter with this dumb, repetitious statement? Why not "President Bob began the meeting early today" or "Murphy was 4.5 minutes late, etc." It's probably because past-president Gary, NEVER started ANY of his meetings on time. Also, we all know already, that "Murph" would start the meeting on time in a Natural Disaster or a DEFCOM 10 Activation!!! Advice: Drop this opening, Sinclair! And, drop into a writing class at say, Proctor Elementary! Finally, stop filling space with "Joe, John, or Tom, Dick & Harry led us in this or that".
Our routines and traditions are not news! Who Cares, who led.!! NEXT!!
In Ring One we have Singer, Leitner & Twitchell . . . Our Race chairman, Ira S., gave the club his usual pre-race milquetoast "thank youuuuuu's". He actually believes this namby-pamby approach is going to motivate our members to show up to help on race day. Advice: Be thankful if the Masco cheerleaders and a few volunteers from the Tri-Town Council show up. Of course, you can count on 2, maybe 1 club member for clean-up detail. You should be out of there by 7:30 PM or so Singer, and don't forget to take down the banner.
Jumpin' Jack, after giving us the benefit of his weeklong bragging marathon on his "snake act," reported the final team results of our Race Sponsor Drive. There were some outstanding individual results! Advice: Leitner shouldn't give up his trash job. Twitchell demonstrated his incredible ability to stick velcroed letters & posters onto display panels. How clever, yawn!, yawn! Then, he takes us down memory lane (again) with the '79 race article and an unsolicited history lesson. Advice: Go away! And, stick with the ad-pencils.
In Ring Two, our illustrious Harry M. Does this guy ever shut up? Of course, Twitchell gave him an opening (as if he needs one) when he praised his old pal for creating the Road Race in '79. Shortly after, Martin began to roll. Give me a break! Is there some rule in the District by-laws that says the Assistant DG's are entitled to 20% of the clubs time on a weekly basis?? Martin popped-up no less than seven, count 'em 7 times, with one message or another during our meeting. Even the Internet advertisers are curtailing & eventually stopping their annoying pop-up messages. Advice: Harry Martin, go and do likewise!
And another thing Harry - retire that corduroy jacket will ya! At least change the color!
In Ring Three, private-at-arms, Bob Was. I know, I know, it's supposed to be sergeant but, do you really think Was deserves this title?? How many members, do you think, took him up on his brilliant offer of 11 $1 fine tickets for the
"discount " price of $10. Answer: None. Duh!!! Of course, in Bob's feeble thinking, this was a real deal. You see, in another life, Bob was associated with the Used Car Sales Tricks & Techniques school-of-thought. Advice: Pick up the latest edition of "Deal Making For Dummies." The price is $5 per copy or 2 for $15. This is your kind of deal, Bob!!!

**Fellow Rotarians, be sure to attend the meeting on October 30, when we set up the game show, "To Tell the Truth" as a means of identifying the demented Irreverent!

Program:
 |
Lisa Foley, Director of Programs at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Middleton gave us a very informative update on the many programs offered to inmates at the jail. She pointed out that inmates are not just housed at the jail; rather they are educated, counseled and hopefully, rehabilitated. The programs are voluntary, but Lisa assured us that staff have their ways of persuading inmates to participate (can you say, "rubber hose?"... just kidding, Lisa!) Here are the programs:
- Substance Abuse Treatment Community for Offenders
- Educational Services
- Aftercare/Reintegration/Life Skills
- Ministry & Parenting Program
- Veteran's Services
- HIV/AIDS Program
- Anger Management Program
- Drug and Alcohol Program Services
- Alternatives to Domestic Violence and Abuse
- Sex Offender Treatment
Vocational training is also available including Print Shop, Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, Food Safety and Sanitation, Barber School, and Automotive. Lisa notes that inmates who have a job after release have a much lower recidivism rate.
