On October 5, 1997, the INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY AND CULTURAL CENTRE of the city of Ranchi in the state of Bihar in India celebrated the completion of the installation of the equipment and books donated by the Rotary Club of Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton, District 7930, USA and The Ranchi North Rotary Club, District 3250, India and The Rotary Foundation.
The affair was attended by the governor of the state of Bihar, the current and past district governors of Rotary, the many Rotarians of several Rotary clubs in Ranchi, the trustees of the library, many prominent citizens and the general population of the Greater Ranchi Community.
This small library is the only public library in this community of over one million people. The facility is the former British Library and was taken over this past year by a board of trustees comprised of many prominent business, political and religious leaders in the community, including many Rotarians.. There was a great need for modern library equipment, computers, copiers, and extensive collections of books including reference, technical, children's and general collections.
The Ranchi North Rotary Club undertook the task of implementing the Library's needs by making arrangements with the Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton Rotary Club through one of the TBM club's members who had been a team leader of a GSE (Group Study Exchange) team in 1992. Each club raised $6,000 and the Rotary Foundation provided a Matching Grant of $12,000, for a total of $24,000.
We were enthusiastic in our involvement in this meaningful project and are delighted in the realization of our goal and in knowing that the Citizens of Ranchi have a modern facility to aid in the educational and cultural experiences of the community.
We earnestly suggest that your Rotary club participate in the many available World Community Service Projects available through the Rotary Foundation. The results are rewarding to all.
